Barbara A. Tyler Award in Museum Leadership

Check-in with Sabrina Gendron, protégé of Serge Guay, winner of the 2021 Barbara A. Tyler Award in Museum Leadership

"For me, Serge Guay, former director of the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père, was a model for the management of a place of memory recognized in the region."

— Sabrina Gendron

Originally from the Lower St. Lawrence, Sabrina Gendron has always been fascinated by the museum and heritage environment of her region. The great-granddaughter of a lighthouse keeper during the Second World War, she wanted to have a seasonal job at the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père while she was studying for her integrated bachelor's degree in historical sciences and heritage studies (BISHEP) at Université Laval in Québec City.

After completing her studies, she was hired as a collections and exhibitions assistant at the Musée régional de Rimouski. In 2016, Sabrina Gendron completed a certificate in administration at the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) and became project and communications manager at the Société rimouskoise du patrimoine (SRP).

She worked for two years on the redesign of the Circuits Rimouski, a project consisting of six circuits with a total of 46 thematic panels and complementary online content that showcases the architecture, history and heritage of Rimouski.

Since 2018, Sabrina Gendron has been the Executive Director of the SRP, manager of the Lamontagne House Historic Site, a museum in an almost 300-year-old residence that presents exhibits on the evolution of domestic architecture in Quebec and the way of life of the first inhabitants in New France.

After being selected as a protégé by Mr. Serge Guay, nominated in 2021 for the Barbara A. Tyler Award for Museum Leadership, Sabrina Gendron continues her efforts to improve the services and activities of the PRS. She regularly participates in training and seminars to perfect her role as a cultural manager.

The Barbara A. Tyler Award is presented every two years. The next opportunity to submit a nomination is the Fall of 2022.
