Nous sommes Montréal, Pointe-à-Callière, cité d’archéologie et d’histoire de Montréal

Through Nous Sommes Montréal, students in Montreal high schools were able to get in touch with their poetic side by combining their personal histories with the history of Montreal. Focusing on students with limited French, the project helped them practice their skills through creative means including poetry, art, and literature. Throughout the 12 workshops, students were able to gain confidence in their abilities and a sense of community through their shared backgrounds and newfound knowledge of Montreal’s past.

A collective narrative history of Montreal was created and shaped by these students cataloguing their immigration experiences and the promise of a new life in Montreal with their lived experiences within the city. This inclusive project continues to resonate in the community through the students and schools as well as through the continued support of the museum.

"Pointe-à-Callière is proud to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Canadian Museums Association in the “Social Impact ” category, for its Nous sommes Montréal project. Directly related to museum education, cultural mediation and the Museum’s civic action, this project, carried out by and for young people, has proven to be a real vector of creativity. Creating it encouraged personal, tangible ownership of Montreal’s history, while promoting perseverance among young people. Just like the Museum’s mission to promote the love and awareness of Montreal past and present, Nous sommes Montréal is the embodiment of a unifying project rooted in its community."
