Paraskeva Clark (Self-Portrait)

Part of the exhibition entitled Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Winner of the 2022 CMA Award for Outstanding Achievement — Research category.

In November 1932, Paraskeva Clark’s captivating Self-Portrait (1931-32) was included in the annual juried exhibition of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, marking the first time Clark had exhibited anywhere. To commemorate this achievement, she inscribed on the back of the painting, “a foot in the door of the temple of Canadian art.”
