New Web Course: Moved to Action

Embark on a journey that goes beyond theory, fostering tangible skills to implement Indigenous self-determination within museum contexts through the lens of the CMA’s Moved to Action Report.

Join us for an eight module web course series, taking place weekly from January 17th - March 13th, 2024 and contribute to the advancement of culturally respectful and collaborative museum practices. This course designed to establish a new national baseline for museums and heritage professionals seeking to support Indigenous self-determination. Gain a deep understanding of how to implement Indigenous perspectives, values, and self-governance within museum structures, programming, and policies. Each module is 2 hours in duration, with workshop and breakout sessions built in to maximize interactivity.

Module 1: Introduction to the United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) in Heritage

Begin by critically examining museum practices and administration through the lens of UNDRIP and the CMA’s Moved to Action report. Understand the historical context, challenges, and opportunities in aligning museums with UNDRIP and fully supporting Indigenous self-determination.

Module 2: Governance and Authoritative Indigenous Leadership in Museums

Explore how to initiate authoritative governance structures that empower Indigenous leadership within museums. Address the importance of equitable decision-making, community representation, and establishing partnerships grounded in mutual respect and humility.

Module 3: Operations: UNDRIP is Everyone’s Job

Delve into the operational aspects of museums, focusing on making UNDRIP everyone’s job. Explore how to create a workplace that is supportive of Indigenous self-determination and attractive to Indigenous professionals in areas that include re-evaluating the systems through which we hire, retain, and promote Indigenous professionals in museum spaces.

Module 4: Indigenous Engagement and Partnership: Building for Tomorrow

Explore innovative approaches to building long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities. Learn how to approach engagement from start to finish in museums, including in programming, educational initiatives, and exhibitions that respect and amplify Indigenous perspectives.

Module 5: Repatriation: More Than Giving Back

Module 6: Empowering Small Museums: Strategies for Successful UNDRIP Support

Tailored for smaller institutions, this module addresses unique challenges and provides practical solutions for supporting Indigenous self-determination in small museums. Explore community engagement, networking solutions, and resource management strategies.

Module 7: Assessment and Empowerment: Measuring Impact through Indigenous Frameworks

Conclude the series by understanding assessment tools aligned with Indigenous frameworks. Explore methods for evaluating the success of Indigenous-centered programs, exhibitions, and organizational structures.
