To apply for funding offered by the Young Canada Works (YCW) program, you’ll need to use the YCW website, run by the Government of Canada. This short guide is designed to help make clear some of the technical elements of submitting an online application.

Before you begin, take quick look at your profile information. If there are checkmarks and the word ‘complete’ next to each section, you are ready to submit an application. If this is not complete, review your profile using the Setting up a YCW account document for assistance.

We also recommend that you draft the content of your application in advance. For assistance creating the content of your application, please see this video tutorial.

Creating a new Job Funding Application

Begin by clicking on the button “Create a new Job Funding Application”.

On the next page, you’ll be asked to pick a program stream. There are three options:

Job opportunities for students Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations (YCW-HO) is for student employment.
Internships in Canada for recent graduates Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (YCW-BCH) is for graduate internships.
Internships abroad for recent graduates Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage — Abroad is for graduate internships taking place outside of Canada.

Choose the one that applies to the position you intend to create. Additional criteria can be found here.

Filling out the application

At the top of the next page are links to each section of your application: program and delivery organization selection, job overview, job budget, job details, job poster, agreement, review and submit. You will need to complete each section.

Note: At the bottom of every section, you’ll see three buttons:

Progress saved Makes sure all your data is saved. Use this button frequently.
Validate Checks your form to see if anything was entered incorrectly. Use at the end of each section, before moving on.
Next Takes you to the next section.

Make sure that you use the save and validate buttons frequently. This way, you won’t lose valuable work if your account times out.

Using the validate button

Make sure to save your progress before hitting validate. When you do, your page will refresh and if there is an issue with your form, you’ll see a red banner.

This banner will link you to any errors in your form. Here, you can see that the ‘total number of days’ wasn’t entered properly, and the error has been highlighted in the banner and just above the related text box.

Notes on Program and Delivery Organization selection

Most applicants using this resource will be selecting Canadian Museums Association as their delivery organization. The Delivery Organization is related to the type of organization that is applying for the funding. For more information, consult YCW Employer Guide or contact a YCW program officer.

Completing your application

Once you’ve completed each section, you’ll find yourself on the ‘Review and submit’ page. This page will allow you to check each section of your application and submit it. Be sure to click the ‘Submit’ button. You’d be surprised how many people skip this important step. If you don’t hit submit, your application will not be submitted for consideration, so make sure you hit submit when your application is ready for review.
