Job Description

CORE FUNCTION:
This position is responsible to collectively establish the artistic direction, development, and implementation of the exhibitions, collection, publications, and associated programs consistent with the strategic plan, mission and policies of Remai Modern. The Head of Exhibitions and Collections will oversee the day-to-day management of the Curatorial Department. 
SCOPE AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Participates in the development of long-term strategies for the Museum to ensure the fulfillment of the mandate and mission as outlined in the Strategic Plan.
2. Develops rationales and business cases to support significant exhibitions initiatives and sets annual goals and priorities for the exhibitions program and collection. 
3. Prepares written and oral reports as required and represents the Gallery with the public, media, external partners and clients.
4. Ensures compliance with legislation, regulations, standards, guidelines, Civic Bylaws, policies, procedures and collective agreements as appropriate. Leads a culture of Safety that promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with applicable legislation and the City of Saskatoon’s policies and departmental procedures. 
5. Participates in the development and review of determining strategy and development, museum policies, and the annual acquisitions plan in alignment with current strategy and policy.
6. Manages and trains Curatorial Department staff including performance appraisals and development plans. Provides recommendations regarding the staffing needs of the curatorial and program staff and contractors.
7. Promotes divisional employee engagement through active listening, recognition and action planning, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and employee involvement.
8. Prepares and controls the annual Division Operating Budget and Business Plan, manages expenditures, and ensures they are aligned with the Corporate Strategic Plan.
9. Leads the Curatorial Department with exhibition making, and prepares and monitors the Curatorial Department budget. 
10. Oversees the development and use of the collection.
11. Contributes to the Development Departments grants, funding requests, and reporting for the exhibition program and collections including taking an active role in seeking out sources of funding. 
12. Provide curatorial content, reviews sponsorship, and other fund development packages to ensure content accuracy.

14. Participates in communications, marketing, and sponsorship of exhibitions and other projects.
15. Contributes to the development of effective partnerships with the local, national, and international visual arts communities.
16. Stewards relationships with key stakeholders funders and donors.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to the Executive Director / Chief Executive Officer.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Degree in art history, curatorial studies, or equivalent.
Four to Six years of national and/or international experience of successfully leading a curatorial team or department including the research, development, implementation, and management of exhibitions programs, and  the development and use of a collection of modern or/and contemporary art.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and possess excellent managerial, interpersonal, financial, and organizational skills.
Considerable Knowledge of Indigenous, Canadian, and international modern and contemporary art
Ability to speak French and/ or an Indigenous language would be considered an asset 
Demonstrated skill in financial management including working within assigned budgets.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to build and foster effective relationships with artists, colleagues, and stakeholders, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Thorough knowledge of public sector, non-profit organization operations, and government relationships
