EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Introduction
The Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre (CMAGS) is a not-for-profit society founded in 1984 that celebrates the history of Canmore, its community and its mountain and coal mining heritage. The society manages the main museum facility located in Canmore’s Civic Centre, the North West Mounted Police Barracks on Canmore’s main street and an offsite museum storage space. CMAGS is currently embarking on delivery of an exciting new long-term strategic plan which, through evaluation of all current facilities, product opportunities and tourism industry trends, will create a new, relevant, exciting and interactive museum experience.
Reporting to the Board Chair, the Executive Director has full responsibility for operating the museum and its associated facilities, as well as ensuring that the Board’s annual strategic goals & objectives are met or exceeded. The Executive Director will also play an essential role in leading the organization through the new development strategy, and will spearhead a new communications strategy that engages and excites stakeholders and community.
The successful candidate will be an experienced business leader, demonstrating successful leadership in corporate and/or not-for-profit environments. Essential skills will include strategic planning, staff and volunteer leadership and development, internal and external communication, and revenue generating ,including fundraising.Previous museum experience is not essential , however the successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for museums and/or other remarkable experiences that celebrate history and people.

Specific areas of responsibility include
Organizational Leadership
Set measurable, timely goals for the organization aligned with the CMAGS strategic plan, and will be held accountable for their delivery.

Manage the day-to-day operations of the museum and associated facilities to ensure goals are met or exceeded. 

Recruit and lead permanent staff, temporary summer students and a sustainable volunteer base to manage operations and special events. 

Develop and implement a strong communication plan for staff, members, stakeholders and community to stimulate awareness and excitement around CMAGS activities. 

Develop and implement a new membership recruitment program featuring an attractive value proposition in alignment with museum strategy. 

Manage organizational budgets, and work with the Bookkeeper, Treasurer and designated board members to ensure budgets and accurate financials are produced in an accurate and timely manner. 

Develop and implement a new marketing strategy that maximizes the museum’s exposure to Canmore’s visitor-based economy and drives museum revenues. 

Ensure implementation of CMAGS plans, policies, directives and standards, and ensure security and safety of staff, volunteers, visitors, collections, equipment and property.

Financial Development
Work in association with the Fundraising Committee to ensure a long-term sustainable financial plan is in place, including donor relations, planning of new fundraising initiatives , and funding for future development.
Develop new and innovative mechanisms for revenue generation through sales and programming, in alignment with the strategic plan.
Maintain up-to-date information on funding opportunities and seek alternative sources of funding such as grants, sponsorships and private/public sector partnerships. Prepare grant applications and reports and liaise with the appropriate granting agencies. 

Community and Stakeholder Relations
Develop and coordinate marketing and public relations activities for the museum barracks, events and programs, including media, social media, and both traditional and non-traditional marketing channels. 

Establish and maintain good working relations with local businesses, community groups, historical societies, tourism groups and the media. 

Establish and maintain good working relations with both local and provincial government representatives. 

Establish and maintain relations with a CMAGS volunteers, including development of an effective and engaging volunteer recruitment and recognition program. 

Respond to speaking and guest appearance invitations and be available for media interviews. 

Identify opportunities for public participation and school programs and oversee development of these programs.

Qualifications and Experience 

Organizational leadership with a minimum of 3 years in a senior leadership role in the corporate or not-for-profit realm. 

Demonstrated experience in change management, ideally including having lead an organization through a new development or significant shift in strategic direction. 

Proven ability to work independently and take on leadership. 

Strong history of revenue generation, ideally thorough a mix of fundraising and self-generated revenues (sales). 

Excellent communication and people skills. 

Proven understanding of modern marketing methodology.
Experience with accounting controls, budgets, finances and statistics

Knowledge of or experience in museum operations is an asset, but not essential. Priority is a proven ability to lead an organization of this nature and work within the strategic direction of the Board.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $60,000.00 to $80,000.00 /year
