Job Description

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

• Working in a team environment, co-ordinate, implement and develop the Live-In Adventure Program, support and help operate with our youth camps, and assist with the set-up and operation of the Family Activity Centre
• Assist with the co-ordination and implementation of other children’s programs at Upper Canada Village
• present information and activities in a knowledgeable, friendly manner, wearing an historical costume, as required, and performing various tasks and role playing as required to represent trades, profession or lifestyles of the period, i.e. printing, cooking, sewing, rug-hooking, quilting, etc.
• research specific themes and activities related to the history of 18th and 19th century Canada, updating related interpretive and programming resources and materials to suit the participants of the various children’s programs
• assist with the orientation, training and coaching of other staff involved with the children’s programs
• provide visitors with information about structures, settings and activities throughout the site
• act to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and protect the resources of the site

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY:
• Oral proficiency in French at a superior level and written proficiency in French at an advanced level.
• Oral and written proficiency in English.
• Conditional upon successful candidate being granted required security clearance for this position (Vulnerable Service Sector check).
• Valid First Aid and CPR certificate.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
• Ability to interpret and demonstrate a range of historical activities and roles within the context of the children’s programs
• Knowledge of the 1860’s views of childhood, historical interpretation, and historical activities used to portray ways of life during the period, i.e. military drill, open-hearth cooking, handwork, historical trades.
• Ability to perform program-related research and perform a range of administrative and support tasks.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and to protect site resources.

COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS:
• Strong oral communication skills to communicate effectively with children and adults, to greet and coordinate program participants.
• Strong leadership skills and a proven ability to operate as an effective team member.
