General Description:
The Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum is an open-air museum with 8 heritage buildings and two interpretive buildings on-site. The ideal candidate has an interest in history, research, collections and/or archives. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be energetic and a self-starter, and have exceptional organizational skills.
Primary Job Functions:
- Propose, undertake and successfully complete an individual research project based on a personal choice of an object within the collection that will help advance their professional development.
- Create one mini-exhibit display for a community partner in promotion of the anticipated Road to Rebellion 2020 exhibit at the Sharon Temple.
- Clean, reorganize and digitize the Museum’s 19th Century Drive Shed.
- Provide daily site tours for individuals and groups based on their specific interests through the sites 8 heritage buildings.
- Assist in front of house services, including welcoming visitors, processing admissions and providing gift shop sales when necessary in the museums Gate House.
- Select and update artifacts for inclusion in the Study, Cookhouse, Log Cabin and upper rooms of the Doan House (as related to the specific time period(s)).
- Be trained on the PastPerfect Collections Management database.
- Further the preservation of our heritage buildings and artifact collection through basic preventive conservation and maintenance under the supervision of the Event & Programming Manager.
General Duties:
- Provide interpretation to the public through tours, education, outreach programs and special events.
- Assist staff with daily attendance tracking, gift shop inventory, and cash balancing.
- Conduct daily and weekly preventative maintenance checks on historic buildings.
- Provide support for wedding and rental preparation.
- Provide support as needed to other staff members.
- Other tasks, as required.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled and returning to full time post-secondary studies in Museum Studies, Conservation, History, Art History, Anthropology, Canadian Studies, Archaeology, or a related field.
- The ideal candidate will have an interest in the career fields of Museums, History, Data Management, Conservation and/or Library and Information Studies.
- Aged 16-30 and registered in the YCW candidate inventory accessible on the YCW website as per the Young Canada Works...in Heritage Organizations program guidelines.
- Previous experience working with the public in a structured setting, in a paid and/or volunteer capacity.
- Strong research, analytical and communication skills with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work independently on specific tasks.
- Computer proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, knowledge of PastPerfect or other Collections Management software is an asset.
- Must possess or be willing to train for Standard First Aid and CPR.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain a successful Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Be prepared to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, and evenings.
Physical Requirements:
The Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum is located north of Toronto on 4.5 acres. As this is a large site with multiple buildings, the candidate will be required to move between these buildings and around the site as needed to conduct various activities.
