Job Description

The Bulkley Valley Museum is recruiting an Assistant Curator to join our work team.

Position Description: Full-time permanent position. 35 hours/week, generally Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Some weekend, evenings, or holiday work may be required, e.g. for special events.
Pay: $17.50/hour

Duties: Under the supervision of the Curator, the Assistant Curator is the second full time permanent staff member for the Bulkley Valley Museum. Primary duties for the position are divided between Curatorial and Administrative work:

Curatorial
• Assist with management of the Museum’s artifact and archival collections as per the Museum’s Collections Policy including data entry, conservation, photography, digital scanning, cleaning, etc.
• Assist with research, development, and installation of exhibitions
• Respond to general inquiries from the public, including research requests
• Assist with development and delivery of educational programming, including tours
• Assist with development and delivery of special events and fundraising
• Assist with grant or report writing as needed
• Assist with outreach and promotion of the Museum’s activities, including social media posts, blog posts, newspaper columns, etc.
Administrative:
• Visitor services including greeting and orienting visitors, answering phone/email, etc.
• Management of the gift shop
• Manage bookings, invoicing, etc. for the rental of the Old Church facility
• Basic administrative bookkeeping
• Manage the Museum’s membership program
• Assist with supervision of summer students, volunteers, or other staff as required

Qualifications:
• Diploma or degree in history, archaeology, anthropology, museum studies, archival or library studies, collections management or conservation, museum education or related fields of study
• Minimum 6 months (consecutive or non-consecutive) experience working with artifact or archival collections in a museum, gallery, archives, library, or related institution, or other related experience
• Demonstrated experience completing historical research
• Excellent written and oral communication skills required, including experience and ease in public speaking and presentations.
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience using MS Publisher, Adobe Creative Suite or another design program, and Google Suite (Calendar, Gmail) considered strong assets
• Experience with InMagic DB Textworks or another museum/archival collection management database software considered a strong asset
• Experience with digital scanning and/or photography of artifact or archival collections considered a strong asset
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work accurately and independently
• Knowledge of current trends and techniques in managing and preserving digital records considered an asset
• Knowledge of copyright and/or privacy laws as they pertain to museums and archives considered an asset
• Knowledge of local and/or regional history considered an asset
• Knowledge of museum educational programming considered an asset
• Candidates must be able to work with co-workers in a shared office space
Additional qualifications: Due to challenges presented by our work spaces, the ability to physically negotiate small/awkward spaces and stairs is required, as is moving/lifting a variety of objects or boxes (up to 50 lbs). Applicants must also be able to work at a computer for long periods of time. A criminal record check, including vulnerable sector check will also be required.
