Job Description

*Position Summary*
Reporting to: Managing Director (currently on leave, temporarily reporting to Executive Director & CEO)
Direct Reports: Membership Officer, Special Events Manager & Development Assistant
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Senior Manager of Development plays a critical role in managing the fundraising activities of the museum, and overseeing and expanding the capacity of the development team. They have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from relationship-management (donors, funders, and prospects), to project management (business development, framing of key approaches, high-quality client delivery, written products) to administration (database protocols, record-keeping, list management, segmentation), and people management (HR/recruiting, mentoring, career progression). A key focus of this role will be strengthening MOCA’s major gifts portfolio. This position is responsible for maximizing and strengthening the capacity of MOCA’s fundraising team, as well as stewarding and cultivating relationships with donors, funders and members.
This position requires strong management and communication skills, the ability to find creative solutions to problems, and sound decision-making. The Senior Manager of Development is able to share a high volume of information across disciplines and departments, providing leadership and support to senior staff and ensuring their department is delivering on their goals. They thrive in a fast-paced environment and exemplify leadership and composure under pressure while maintaining high morale.
*Responsibilities*
**Fundraising & Donor Relations**
–Execute annual fundraising strategies and programs to achieve short term and long term targets.
–Aggressively seek new funding sources and cultivate relationships with new donors, maintain relationships with existing donors, with a goal of increasing giving levels as appropriate.
–Develop sponsorship opportunities aligning the interests of the museum’s programming with those of major corporate sponsors. Cultivate and steward corporate support and solicit targeted sponsorship for major exhibits and events.
–Support the sourcing and procurement of grants (government, foundation, etc) and oversee the grant-writing and reporting calendar.
–Oversee management of the donor database; set policies and procedures for retention of data, tracking fundraising activity, research and reporting.
–Maintain security and quality controls.
–Ensure appropriate recognition and stewardship initiatives are developed and implemented to recognize and honour donor and volunteer contributions appropriately.
–Ensure that the CEO and Board of Directors are well-positioned and prepared for fundraising meetings and presentations.
–Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and senior management to ensure maximum effectiveness in major gift relationships and solicitations and in positioning the museum’s mission through all communications and development functions.
–Work very closely with the marketing department and Membership Officer to support the establishment of membership development goals and marketing activities.
–Continuously look for ways to improve the member and audience experience.
–Oversee the development department’s slate of stewardship, cultivation and fundraising events, approving event concept/budgets, providing direction on the invitation and list management processes, and maintaining oversight of event execution. 
**Internal and External Leadership**
–Hire, develop and coach a high performing development team to effectively implement the annual fundraising plan to meet annual fundraising goals and support growth.
–Maintain a personal portfolio of donors and oversee the portfolios of other museum staff, including the CEO, Board members, and Campaign Cabinet members.
–Support the Executive Director & CEO and senior management in the development of a multi-year budgeting and planning process that will ensure multi-year donor commitments.
–Represent the museum in meetings with potential and existing funders and serve as a representative for MOCA in the greater cultural, philanthropic, and professional communities.
–Support the CEO and senior management in the preparation for and implementation of the museum’s campaigns. 
–Manage proposals, negotiations, contracts and gift agreements.
–Identify best practices and improve internal systems and processes with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.
–Mentoring, coaching; visible, approachable sounding board/resource
–Monitor revenue margins and project, report and evaluate attendance figures for development events.
–Report regularly on fundraising revenue targets and achievements to the staff and board.
–Share in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications.
–Other duties as assigned.
*Qualifications*
–5 years experience in development, 2+ at a management level
–Success in roles requiring the execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities
–Strong understanding of the not-for-profit and charitable community in both Toronto and Canada-wide
–Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good humour
–Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders from all different areas of the organization – funders and donors, teammates, community members, etc.
–Operates with excellence in mind in all matters, with the confidence to defend/debate ideas without ego interfering
–Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential
