Job Description
The Bulkley Valley Museum is seeking applicants for two (2) Museum Assistant summer positions. Please note that the final number of positions available and the duration of employment are conditional on final approval from the funding bodies, and the needs of the Museum.
SALARY : $15/hour + 4% vacation pay
HOURS: 35 hours/week for up to 16 weeks (approx. May 12th – August 29th 2020, start date negotiable). Hours of work are generally 9am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, with occasional evening or holiday work as required for special events.
DUTIES: Duties for the Museum Assistant include: completing artifact and archival digitization including artifact photography, scanning, and optical character recognition (OCR), updating collections management database records, assisting with research and development for upcoming exhibitions, delivery of visitor services including exhibit interpretation and/or assisting with delivery of special events, assisting with youth summer programming (week long summer camp), and assisting with daily administrative operations such as social media, gift shop sales, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Preferred areas of study include university/college history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, library, archival studies, or a related field. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. The candidate must be comfortable interacting with all segments of the public, including working with and supervising children and youth in an educational setting. Must have excellent research skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel required. Familiarity with social media platforms, museum/archival database software, and/or photography or scanning equipment considered assets. Previous experience in a museum/heritage environment or with educational/interpretive programming considered an asset. Must be fluent in English, written and/or oral communication in French or another minority language considered an asset. All Applicants MUST be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee protection, and must be between the ages of 15-30. Please note that evidence of student status (full time in previous semester, returning to full time studies in the fall) will be required for any position(s) hired through Young Canada Works funding.
