Job Description

When the National Gallery of Canada was established in 1880, its collection consisted of a single 19th-century landscape. Nearly 140 years later, the Gallery is home to one of the most extraordinary collections of art from across Canada and around the world.

The National Gallery of Canada is one of the world's most respected art institutions, renowned for its exceptional collection of approximately 75,000 works of art, revered for its scholarship, and applauded for its unique ability to engage audiences of all ages and all levels of artistic knowledge. Over the years, the National Gallery of Canada has built a world-class collection spanning all periods of Canadian art, richly representing works by Europeans—from old masters to contemporary artists—and notable for strong holdings in Indigenous art and photography, and contemporary American art.

With a new Director and CEO appointed in February 2019, the youngest person to assume this post in more than a century, the leadership is passionate about revitalizing the Gallery’s relevance to audiences across Canada and beyond. With a vision for the Gallery to reflect both the times in which we live and art’s importance to them, the Gallery is seeking a Deputy Director, Communications and Public Affairs.

As a Deputy Director, reporting to the CEO, you will be a core member of the senior executive team. The Deputy Director will contribute to all corporate, operational, and strategic discussions, and guide, coach, and mentor a talented team. Your scope and influence will be broad and varied, encouraging collaboration across departments, covering marketing and social media, communications and media relations, membership and annual giving, sponsorship and corporate giving, and publications and oversight.

As the ideal candidate for this new role, you are an exceptional leader, an engaged team player, and a strategic and creative communicator and marketer. Colleagues value your composure, counsel, and ability to bring clarity to complexity. You are a savvy, insightful and fluently bilingual professional who easily navigates traditional, new, and emerging communications and marketing platforms, tools and techniques. The ideal candidate believes strongly in the obligation of ensuring communities across Canada continue to thrive.

If you are interested in joining a leading, national organization, where you can apply your craft in a dynamic environment, please forward your CV and cover letter in confidence to Michelle Richard and Renée Young at ryoung@boyden.com. Please include “Deputy Director, Communications & Public Affairs” in the subject line of your e-mail.
