Job Description

Position: Curator, Heritage Schoolhouse Museum and Archives - Curriculum and Instructional Services

Work Location: Heritage Schoolhouse Museum and Archives (21 Renfrew Drive, Markham, L3R 8H3)

Work Schedule: 35 hours/week

In compliance with Board policies and procedures, responsible for all aspects of the management of the Heritage Schoolhouse and Museum, including planning, evaluation, budget accountability, staff management and supervision, development of educational programming and outreach programming, exhibition planning and collections management and preservation. Oversee the development and maintenance of an automated system of the Heritage Schoolhouse’s collections.


MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES:

To oversee the development and coordination of the educational programming offered through the Heritage Schoolhouse for Board’s schools, outreach programs, programs with community partners, as well as lectures and workshops that may be required.
To supervise the accessioning, cataloging, indexing and storage of the museum’s collection and to ensure appropriate preservation of the facility itself as well as the artifacts in the collection.
To supervise staff, prepare budget estimates, written reports and other materials related to the Heritage Schoolhouse operations.
To develop and prepare exhibits related to the educational programs and materials collected by the Heritage Schoolhouse.
To provide information and support to other areas of the Board in relations to heritage conservation and information, as well as, establishing and maintaining good working relations with other historical organizations and community partners.
To provide research assistance to members of the public, as required.
To maintain the site and ensure regular maintenance is conducted, including maintaining communication with property owners.
To perform other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

A three year post-secondary degree or diploma in museum studies is required, or equivalent, as approved by the Board, is required
Minimum three years experience in museum practices required.
Knowledge of historical resource management to ensure that all aspects of the collection and facility are maintained.
Knowledge of interpretation, education and learning in order to manage existing programs/exhibits and to develop new programs/exhibits.
Effective verbal and written communication, interpersonal, problem solving and computer skills are required.
