Job Summary
The Deputy Director, Exhibitions & Outreach reports to the Director and CEO of the National Gallery of Canada. They have one Executive Assistant and five Chiefs as direct reports (Chief, Education and Public Programs; Chief Publications and Copyrights; Chief, Design Services; Chief, Technical Services; Chief, Exhibitions and Loans Programs. The Deputy Director, Exhibitions & Outreach is responsible for the strategic vision, development and implementation of all Ottawa based and travelling exhibitions permanent collection installations, publication programs and supporting services. The Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Outreach is a member of the NGC’s Senior Management team and provides leadership and strategic input into the Gallery`s priorities and activities. They lead a team in planning, directing, managing, organizing and implementing all activities and provides operational oversight of the areas within the Exhibitions and Outreach division.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides direction and leadership to the NGC`s overall exhibition program design and scope. This is done in accordance with the Gallery’s Exhibitions Policy and Exhibitions Program Committee framework, ensuring achievement of the Gallery`s mission in areas of breadth of subject matter, scholarship and general appeal, Program includes Ottawa based exhibitions, The Art Network (national), and the international partnerships.

Provides expert production oversight of the program including exhibition management methodology, scheduling, resource management, timely delivery, scholarly content, public accessibility and design quality. Represents the NGC to Canadian and International institutions, partners with government offices, diplomatic parties, sponsors and other stakeholders. Negotiates and recommends contractual framework based on industry standards for terms and conditions applicable to travelling exhibitions, or the production, conservation and security of exhibitions.

Develops and maintains relationships with donors and lenders in the art community including public and private collections. Develops and applies quality assurance policies, procedures and standards for the development and management of exhibition programs, the publications program, and collections management including storages, tracking, insurance and art movements, integrated installation and graphic design programs.

Develops policies and procedures for the NGC relating to Canadian Intellectual Property Rights laws and the Canadian Status of the Artist Act, including NGC practices for contracting to artists in the acquisition, display and production areas of the operation. Ensure adherence to intellectual property rights laws in the use of images, and texts through proper licensing.

Governance Activities

The Deputy Director, Exhibitions & Outreach is a member of the NGC’s Senior Management Committee; attends weekly meetings, participates and provides advice on all issues relating to the Exhibitions and Outreach Division.

Reports to the Board of Trustees Programs and Advancement Committee, on a quarterly basis, on prospective exhibitions and related programs or policies. Provides guidance and support to the Gallery’s efforts in seeking exhibition sponsorships and major gifts.

Chairs the Gallery’s Exhibition Program Committee and leads the decision making process regarding policies and procedures on Outreach developments and strategies for traveling exhibitions.

Chairs the Gallery`s Publication Review committee and the decision making process regarding policies and procedures and publications projects.

Attends Curatorial Forum to provide advice and support

Fiscal and Human Resources Management

Controls ‘Exhibition Budgets’ ($4-5 Million annually). Approves financial resources necessary for the development and production of NGC exhibition and installation programs for all departments across the organization. Maintains a 5-year plan as well as detailed Annual Work-Plans

Controls ‘Operating Budgets’ for salaries and non-exhibition expenses of the 5 departments within the Exhibitions and Outreach Department. Approves budgets, allocates financial resources and approves expenditures.

Provides leadership and promotes collaborative teamwork while directing the activities of staff reporting directly to the position including; assigning and monitoring work, hiring, training and evaluating work performances.

Performs other related duties.

Requirements
The position requires a minimum of 10 years’ experience in art museums and galleries;

The Deputy Director must have a Master’s degree in Art History, Art conservation or Museology or the equivalent;

An established network of exhibition professional across Canada and / or the world;

The successful candidate must possess superior communication and presentation skills in both official languages; strategic thinking, analysis and strong leadership;

Significant experience leading large production and programming teams in the development and installation of exhibitions;

Significant experience developing and managing budgets;

Significant experience managing staff (unionized) effectively and working collaboratively in team settings;

Significant experience negotiating and managing loans of works of art, contracts and legal agreements;

A willingness to travel, as needed.
