ORCKA Day Camp Paddling Instructor

Summary
The Canadian Canoe Museum is looking for two energetic individuals to lead our 2020 Summer Paddling Day Camp sessions.

Our staff are positive, enthusiastic team leaders! Summer Paddling Camps Instructors are responsible for the safe and effective delivery of a diverse range of sessions and programs. Given that the action never stops, applicants should enjoy working in a dynamic work environment. Very strong organizational and interpersonal skills are a must, as well as a yearning to be outdoors and on the water!

We run one day to five-day paddle camps. Campers learn the basics of canoeing, play paddling games, swim, and gain the skills outlined in the ORCKA Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 programs. On most of the five-day camps,1 full day is spent at the Canoe Museum with a mix of on-water skill development, outdoor fun and games and traditional craft.

The Canoe Museum offers summer paddling day camps for youth ages 8 to14. We provide a fun, safe and supportive environment for kids to interact with nature, hone their paddling skills, meet new friends and enjoy summertime in the Kawarthas to the fullest. We’re proud to teach skill levels laid out by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA). We also offer two action packed multi-activity End of Summer Camps.

Minimum Qualifications:
• ORCKA member in good standing
• ORCKA Basic Canoeing Instructor
• Current Standard First Aid & CPR Level A
• Bronze Cross (NLS preferred)
• Proven experience facilitating on-water programming for youth
• Current and clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks

Successful Candidates Will Possess:
• Experience in daily planning and delivering the ORCKA Basic Canoeing program
• Proven experience in a leadership role
• Proven teaching experience
• Strong risk management skills and strong decision-making abilities
• Strong organizational skills
• Proven experience with creating engaging and dynamic programs
• Excellent oral communication skills
• Maturity and strong sense of responsibility and dedication
• Comfort to work independently and without direct supervision
• Ability to effectively liaise with camper families, Canoe Museum staff and volunteers
• Knowledge of cooperative games, initiative tasks and team-building exercises
• Positive, upbeat, energetic and able to go, go, go!
• Additional skills and interests in nature and/or historical interpretation, artisan skills, music, arts, or drama would be an asset
