Job Description

Executive Director - East Coulee School Museum

The East Coulee School Museum welcomes thousands of visitors a year to enjoy the rich history of the Drumheller Valley in our designated historic school house. The Dinosaur Valley Heritage Society is seeking an Executive Director to oversee all aspects of the East Coulee School Museum including its stewardship, operations, and sustainability.

Position Type: Full-time from April - October, 20-28 hours per week from October - April
Hourly Wage: $20.00 - $22.00 /hour
Start Date: May - June, 2020

This position is funded through grants, museum admission sales, and museum cafe revenue. Continued employment, and salary increase, requires successful museum operations and obtainment of further grants.

Duties:

• Represent the museum at external meetings, to the media and various communities to promote the museum, its programs and revenue services (cafe and gift shop).
• Promote the museum through various marketing media
• Manage staff - plan, organize, and train volunteers and summer staff. Develop a positive work environment and establish performance standards
• Develop and administer policies and programs as needed for business and museum operation standards
• Communicate with all levels of government, stakeholders, donors, contractors, suppliers, consignors, and the board of directors
• Develop and ensure the adherence to all budgets and financial planning under the direction of the board of directors and to the Alberta Museums Association standards
• Secure grant funding and organize fundraising events to ensure financial sustainability of the museum
• Develop product lines for museum cafe and gift shop
• Collect meaningful visitor demographic and experience records
• Manage the historic integrity of the building, and the museum collection
• Explore and evaluate new avenues of income and community engagement
• Oversee all day-to-day operations including general front-line duties in museum admissions, program administration, cleaning, cafe food preparation, and meal service

Qualifications:

• An undergraduate degree in Museum Studies, History, Education, Anthropology, Business or related field. Equivalent experience in lieu of education will also be considered.
• 3+ years experience in a leadership role in museums, business development, managing staff or related.
• Success in fundraising through grant writing, and event planning
• Experience developing and managing operation budgets
• Working knowledge of collections management, program development, heritage conservation, and museum governance

Environmental Hazards: The Executive Director is required to work in an office, cafe, and museum environment requiring long periods of sitting, standing, and walking. They are required to lift loads of up to 10kg. Some areas of the museum are accessed by stairs only and the Executive Director requires the mobility to use them. Stress might be a factor during busy summer months, event days, and with tight deadlines.
