Job Description

The Opportunity
The Executive Director is a community-oriented leader with a passion for art museums and contemporary art practice. They collaborate with many stakeholders and lead a diverse professional team, providing direction and oversight in the development and delivery of dynamic programs including exhibitions, education, the collection, and outreach initiatives. Profile of the Gallery in Brief
Located in the heart of Nanaimo, on the lands of the Snuneymuxw, Nanaimo Art Gallery is an ambitious public art museum that inspires and challenges its communities through art.
Over the past several years, the Gallery has moved through a phase of significant transformation to reposition itself in the communities we serve and enhance our capacity. We have completed two phases of renovations at our City-owned facility, expanded our team, created new partnerships, and re-imagined and enriched our integrated exhibition and education programs. These strategic shifts, as well as an institutional willingness to take risks, experiment, and invite and incorporate feedback along the way, has helped us to reframe and strengthen our relationships to artists and audiences. Now, we are a trusted organization with a growing reputation.

Unique in our region, we are creating new understandings of the potential of contemporary art. An inquiry-based approach infuses and connects all Gallery activities and a small, dedicated team of staff, board and volunteers, offer a program that is rooted in our unique regional context and resonates with audiences globally.
