Job Description

Working under the supervision of the Director of the Chinatown Storytelling Centre and the Curator, the Collection Manager and Researcher will:

Manage the process of documentation and records of loans and donations
Edit and maintain existing catalogue records and locations of collection artifacts
Assess, process, and catalogue incoming artifacts and archival materials
Photograph, document and digitize materials in preparation for cataloguing
Use the Collective Access database to catalogue artifacts and archival materials
Follow industry best practices in condition reporting, handling and storage of artifacts and archival materials
Organize the oral history interview collection
Research and draft text for display labels
Advise on preventive or interventive conservation measures on items to be displayed
Assemble and assist in installation of display items for exhibitions
Assist with oral history interviews and digitally archive the recordings
Train curatorial staff and volunteers in database input and management
Work collaboratively with museum staff and volunteers on exhibitions and programming
Administrative tasks and duties, as needed for the holistic operation of the Storytelling Center

QUALIFICATIONS

· Graduate degree in a field such as museum studies, archival management, history or a related area

· Or an undergraduate degree in a related field with sufficient training and minimum 2 years related work experience at a museum or cultural organization

· Familiarity in new media techniques and software programs that enable electronic data storage

· Understanding of museum best practices including collections management

· Experience conducting oral history interviews and/or working directly with community members

· Strong research proficiency with effective written and oral communication skills

· Ability to form and sustain partnerships with team members, external partners and volunteers

· Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple high priority projects in a dynamic environment

· Knowledge of Chinese Canadian history and Chinese language are definite assets
