Job Description:

The Billy Bishop Home and Museum is a National Historic Site and provides students with an opportunity to learn about our Canadian Heritage at a significant Museum. This position provides an opportunity for students to become familiar with all aspects of working in a Museum setting by assisting the Curator of Collections in researching, developing, organizing and implementing new exhibits; enhancing permanent exhibits; cataloguing artefacts; researching and developing educational programs; and planning tours. The students will learn about the care and organization of the Museum's collection in order for the community to benefit in learning and enjoying the significant collection the Museum owns. Students will scan and digitally prepare photos of artefacts, documents and past exhibits to enhance accessibility to our immediate community and to increase our potential for provincial and national outreach. They will also learn about and assist with our ongoing efforts to raise our local, provincial, and national communities’ awareness about the contributions of all our Canadian Veterans and our Canadian Heritage through the lens of Billy Bishop Home: Museum, Archives and National Historic Site with a focus on the First World War, the Second World War, and especially on Billy Bishop.

Billy Bishop Home & Museum, the only National Historic Site in Grey County, located in Owen Sound, Ontario, was built in 1884 and showcases the Bishop family history.  It is also the boyhood home of Air Marshal William Avery “Billy” Bishop VC, CB, DSO & Bar, MC, DFC, ED , the charismatic hero of the Great War.  An adventurous, mischievous, and restless spirit, Billy was driven to be the best in all he did. This Victorian home attracts many tourists throughout the year. Parts of the Museum are decorated in the Victorian style with many original furnishings that are original to the Bishop family. We offer diverse programs to our visitors, both local and those tourists that appreciate our cultural heritage and spend time in our attractions, historic sites, stores, and restaurants. We have architectural tours, weekly heritage ghost walks, and present visitors with an opportunity to partake in our most popular event, our Victorian Teas. Students will assist in organizing and implementing those programs, and will help develop and present new child, adult and community inclusive activities throughout the summer with a focus on public programming throughout July and August. We also have an on-site gift shop where students will greet visitors and have their first opportunity to promote the Museum, Billy Bishop, our gift shop, and the city of Owen Sound. Our students will be trained in outstanding customer service which will enable them to engage tourists in conversation to discover what has brought them to the area and what their interest in the Museum is. This will enable the students to determine what might interest them at the end of their tour. Essentially, everything the on-duty docent does is to make the visitor experience the best it can be.

Those interested in applying for this position should forward a complete resume with cover letter to the following address as early as possible but no later than midnight, Monday, April 16, 2018.
