About Our Opportunity
As the Senior Director, you are critical in providing consistent leadership and direction to the entire Nova Scotia Museum (NSM), in communicating departmental policies, and developing divisional policies. In addition, you’ll lead with innovative solutions and work in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Museum’s Board of Governors; and with NSM staff, and internal and external partners to develop engaging heritage experiences / products and to generate collections-based research and content development. These efforts will result in the implementation of new projects, strategies and services intended to support the advancement of museum/heritage interest’s, province-wide and beyond.

You are accountable for the overall leadership of the 17 rural NSM sites and are the department’s primary contact with the local management boards who operate these sites. You are also responsible for the overall management of capital, financial, and human assets of the NSM’s Collections, Interpretation & Infrastructure unit, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (Lower Water Street), the Museum of Natural History (Summer Street), the Museum of Industry (Stellarton) and the 8 seasonal directly managed sites, in order to deliver high quality, safe and relevant museum experiences to visitors, the public, clients and partners. You will also ensure the long-term stewardship, preservation and use of the Provincial collection of artifacts and specimens.

With respect to the heritage buildings in the museum system, you’ll work closely with the Department of Transportation & Infrastructure Renewal in planning and implementing activities concerning these buildings and other physical assets owned by the Province.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Archives, Museums and Libraries, you’ll oversee the NSM management team, as well, you are responsible for 9 direct reports. You are a key strategic advisor to government leaders and officials ensuring a comprehensive understanding of challenges and opportunities affecting museum operations, specifically: heritage buildings, collections and interpretation. You’ll work closely with the departmental management team across divisions and cultivate a work environment that respects public service values.

About You
You are an experienced leader, preferably within the museum field, with a demonstrated ability to nurture talent and create a productive, results-based workplace culture with strategic focus. You are a relationship builder and experienced in complex decision-making.

You are a strong communicator, presenter and negotiator with an ability to take in new information, quickly synthesize it to provide excellent advice, rooted in good judgement and professional expertise. You are well organized and capable of prioritizing and delegating high volumes of work under tight timelines. You also have a proven track record of relationship building beginning with staff and continuing to board members and external partners.

With this, you will have a graduate degree in a related field (such as Museum Studies, Arts or Sciences, etc.) and several years of related and demonstrable, progressive management level experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Leadership competencies required at this level of work are: Decisiveness, Strategic Orientation, Developing Others, Team Leadership, Self-Awareness and Personal Impact, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.
