Royal Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the largest in the world. With over 2,700 acres of cultivated gardens and nature preserves, it is also one of the biggest urban nature sanctuaries and marshland restoration sites in North America. With its extraordinary land holdings, breathtaking landscapes, biodiversity, collections, facilities, educational and conservation programs, RBG is a top-rated regional tourist attraction and a global leader in its sector.  

35 hours/week 
Contract Duration: September 16, 2019 to March 31, 2020 
 
Position Description: 
We are searching for an enthusiastic and dynamic communicator who is passionate about sharing nature, horticulture, and environmental sustainability content with others through the use of engaging interpretive educational programming. This Intern will work with our Interpretation Officer, Head of Education, and RBG colleagues to support the development and delivery of interpretive programs for special events, projects and exhibits including: Nature Tales, The Great Pumpkin Trail, Holiday Traditions, Heritage and Heroes project, and Wildlife Rescue exhibit. 
 
Responsibilities:  
Use knowledge of natural history, sustainable environmental practices, biological diversity, local history, and horticulture to assist with development of engaging interpretive programs for a wide range of audiences  
Assist with developing program plans, sourcing materials, props, and costumes 
Assist with developing and delivering training for staff and volunteers 
Assist with development of small exhibits/displays 
Interpretive program delivery  
Draft event and exhibit programming reports 
Other duties as assigned  
 
Requirements:  
Recent university or college graduate in natural science/biology/botany, environmental science, education, museum studies, horticulture, or related field 
A passion for the natural world and an enthusiasm for connecting people with nature 
Good working knowledge of botany and/or local plants and wildlife 
Exceptional English oral and written communication skills and ability to apply them to developing engaging interpretive programs for general audiences 
Interpretation/public speaking/presentation/programming experience 
Commitment to service excellence; experience in an environment dedicated to customer service 
Highly organized self-starter with strong attention to detail who can work well independently and in a team environment 
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment while balancing multiple priorities  
Ability to work effectively in a MS Office Environment 
Possess valid First Aid certification and valid driver’s license 
Ability to work outdoors in gardens and on trails of varying terrain in all seasons 
Ability to work evenings and weekends as required with compensatory time off in lieu 
A satisfactory Police Check will be required of the successful candidates, at their expense  
 
Candidates must meet Young Canada Works grant requirements including:  
Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory 
Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada 
Be legally entitled to work in Canada 
Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment period 
Be a recent post-secondary graduate (within 24 months of start date)  
Not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed through the internship 
Be an unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate, i.e. not employed full-time  
Not have previously participated in or been paid under the CMA Internship program, or any other Career Focus program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy  
 
Assets:  
Experience in interpretive and/or educational program development  
Formal certification and/or training in interpretation  
Personal transportation 
Fluency in French
