General Information
The Old Log Church Museum is a small community museum responsible for documenting, preserving and sharing Yukon’s spirited history. We strive to provide our visitors with an enjoyable & educational experience. Located in downtown Whitehorse, the museum is housed in a unique log church built by Reverend R.J. Bowen in 1900. The Old Log Church and Rectory are designated territorial and municipal heritage sites. The permanent collection of the OLCM has 4500+ objects in the collection ranging from archival materials to ecclesiastical vestments and artifacts.
Job Description
Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director, the Collections Assistant will:
1. Conduct a full inventory of artefacts to verify the location, determine they arephysically present, determine accuracy for records and identify any collections management issues. 2. Completing a test assessment of a spot inventory check using current procedures. 3. Accession a backlog of 15 artefacts. 4. Review and update our collections procedure manual. 5. Improve and standardize collections documentation by updating our database including updating and creating condition reports, upgrading artefact descriptions and geographical information and creating a glossary of terms to standardize data entry.
The Collections Assistant will also assist the Executive Director in a number of collections-related tasks, include environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, cataloguing, research, updating policies and procedures as well as records management. The Collections Assistant may be asked to perform other duties as required.
Qualifications A minimum of two years of experience with inventorying, cataloguing and collections database management (can be a combination of employment, and/or educational experience). Working knowledge of collections management care, documentation and preventative conservation practices and standards. Experience creating and writing museum policies and procedures. Degree or diploma in a discipline appropriate to museum work, such as museum management, curatorial, collections management,conservation, archives/records management, archeology, anthropology, history, or First Nations studies. Strong organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail. Strong oral and written communication skills. Comfortable and willing to speak publically. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Experience conducting research. Content knowledge of Yukon and/or Yukon Anglican Church history is an asset. Proficient in the use of computers including MS Office Word and Excel. Experience working with databases (FileMaker Pro and Collective Access) and Adobe Suite is considered an asset.
