Royal Botanical Gardens is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the largest in the world. This is a 4-month contract beginning April 30, 2018 and ending August 31, 2018, 35 hours/week. Pending the receipt of external funding the position may be extended until December 7, 2018,
We are searching for an enthusiastic and dynamic communicator who is passionate about sharing nature, horticulture, environmental sustainability, and local history content with others through the use of engaging interpretive educational programming. This Intern will work with our Interpretation Officer, Interpretation Projects Coordinator, Head of Education, Head of Science, and RBG colleagues to support the development and delivery of interpretive programs for RBG’s new Heritage and Heroes project, garden interpretation, and special events. Position extension is dependent on pending external funding.
Use knowledge of local history, natural history, sustainable environmental practices, biological diversity, and horticulture to assist with development of engaging interpretive programs for a wide range of audiences
Assist with developing program plans, sourcing materials, props, and costumes
Assist with developing and delivering training for staff and volunteers
Assist with development of small exhibits/displays
Interpretive program delivery
Draft event and exhibit programming reports
Other duties as assigned
Outdoor work required in gardens and on trails of varying terrain in all seasons
Evening and weekend time required with compensatory time off in lieu
Recent university or college graduate in natural science/biology/botany, environmental science, education, museum studies, history, horticulture, or related field
A passion for the natural world and an enthusiasm for connecting people with nature
An interest in local history
Good working knowledge of botany and/or local plants and wildlife
Exceptional English oral and written communication skills and ability to apply them to developing engaging interpretive programs for general audiences
Interpretation/public speaking/presentation/programming experience
Highly organized self-starter with strong attention to detail
Ability to work well independently and in a team environment
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment while balancing multiple priorities
Ability to work effectively in a MS Office Environment
Possess valid First Aid certification and valid driver’s license
A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening will be required of the successful candidates, at their expense
Be a Canadian citizen or be legally entitled to work in Canada
Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following grant requirements:
Be a recent post-secondary graduate (within 24 months of start date)
Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment period
Not have previously participated in or been paid under any Career Focus program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy
Be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory.
Experience in interpretive and/or educational program development
Experience with live theatre productions
Formal certification and/or training in interpretation
Graphic design skills and experience with Adobe Illustrator
Fluency in French
