Job Description:

Job Summary:
Fort Calgary is an award-winning National Historic Site. It marks the original location of the 1875 North West Mounted Police fort, which began the city of Calgary and modern intercultural relations in the area. We are looking for multiple Heritage & Engagement Coordinators for the 2018 summer season. This role is a perfect summer job opportunity for students with interest in the history of Calgary and Canada, the tourism industry, and/or event management.

The position will last from approximately the end of May, to the beginning of September. The candidate will work five shifts weekly at 7.5 hours a shift, though may work a combination of weekdays and weekends. Because of the nature of the job, there will also be some weekend and/or holiday work necessary – including on July 1 (Canada Day).

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Engagement, the core responsibilities of the Heritage & Engagement Coordinator include:

• HERITAGE INTERPRETATION: Facilitating interpretive tours in the museum and around the Fort Calgary site. Scripts and research sources will be provided, though it will be the incumbent’s responsibility to speak to the material confidently – and to search out additional research when needed.

• VISITOR SERVICES: Welcoming and assisting guests at the Visitor Services front desk. In this role, the candidates will also be trained to use the cash registers for admission or museum shop purchases, as well as in leading daily cash outs and deposits. Providing exceptional customer service is an integral part of this role.

• EVENT MANAGEMENT: Providing event and logistical support for all special events, including Canada Day, Heritage Day, and the Walk for Reconciliation (among others).

• EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING: Providing support to the Education Department as needed.

NOTE: This position is grant dependent and will be filled upon approval of a grant from the Young Canada Works Program. Applicants must fulfill the criteria of the Young Canada Works Program to be eligible for the position. Thus, candidates must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment, have been a fulltime student in the semester prior to the position and be returning to school fulltime in the semester following the position, and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status. Applicants must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment and not have another fulltime job (over 30 hours per week) while employed with YCW. To apply you need to be registered in the Young Canada Works online candidate inventory.

Skills & Experience:
• Must fulfill the student criteria outlined above
• General knowledge or interest in the history of Calgary and Canada
• Experience facilitating interpretive tours, group programs, or workshops
• Experience working with cash registers, record-keeping, and managing money in retail or tourism settings
• Event experience would be considered an asset
• Ability to speak other languages would be an asset, but is not necessary
• Experience working with the general public in a friendly, customer-service oriented way
• Ability to work well with others, be self-motivated, and maintain an expected level of professionalism (i.e., punctuality, approachability & dress code)

Education:
The candidates must be currently enrolled fulltime in a post-secondary educational institution, and must be returning to school fulltime in September 2018.

All Fort Calgary employees are required to work on Canada Day.
