THE OPPORTUNITY The Canadian Canoe Museum is looking for a Volunteer Manager to join our team for a one- year contract (parental leave coverage). Working with and reporting to the Director of Philanthropy and the Executive Director, the Volunteer Manager plays a vital role in in the day-to-day activity relative to the robust community of volunteers at the Canoe Museum and the redevelopment project. The Volunteer Manager is responsible for expanding, maintaining and fostering relationships with volunteers, and for providing support to the Board of Directors and its standing committees. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES • Manage the entire volunteer program including the current museum volunteers and new museum project volunteers. This includes organization and stewardship, recruitment, training and recognition; • Orient new volunteers to the museum’s mission, goals, staff and operations; • Create and maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment for all new and existing volunteers; • Work closely with each department within the museum to ensure all volunteer needs are being met; • Coordinate and manage all monthly and annual volunteer events; • Manage the Volunteer Council, its organization, execution and reporting; • Nominate volunteers for municipal, provincial and other awards; • Manage communications with volunteers including creation of a monthly volunteer e- newsletter; • Responsible to engage the volunteer community in all museum activities and as part of the consultation of the new museum; • Track volunteer activity, years of service, volunteer hours and contact information in Sumac database; • Act as a resource to the Board of Directors and its standing committees; • Ensure frequent and ongoing communications with board and committee members; • Create board meeting packages for monthly distribution; • Attend monthly board and committee meetings and capture accurate meeting minutes; • Create orientation packages for incoming board members on an annual basis; • Support board members with special requests for access to the museum, meeting room use, and guided tour bookings. The position requires occasional evening and weekend work. Must possess a valid driver's license, have access to a car and willing to occasionally travel within Ontario.
