Job Description:

The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (RTMP) celebrates the spectacular diversity of life on Earth, from the tiniest grain of pollen to the mightiest dinosaur. As a leading scientific authority in palaeontology, the Museum strives to engage our audiences through awe-inspiring exhibits, award-winning programs, and, increasingly at a distance, through social media and other digital technologies. Every year, the RTMP welcomes over 450,000 visitors from around the world through our doors and over half a million individuals digitally. We are continuously striving to find new ways to engage visitors with discovery, spark curiosity, provoke discussion, stimulate imagination, and increase understanding of Alberta’s palaeontological past.

Role
Reporting to the Director, Exhibits and Communications, the Head, Marketing and Public Relations plays a critical role in keeping our audiences informed and enthusiastic about the work happening at the Museum. With the upcoming opening of a 1,100 m2 expansion, new exhibits, and ongoing scientific discoveries, this is an exciting time to be a part of the Museum. We are looking for a capable and dynamic individual with a vision to plan and implement large and creative campaigns. As the successful candidate, you will build on your already strong and well-rounded background in marketing and communications planning, issues management, media relations, web and social media strategy development, events planning, and project management to take the Museum to the next level.

To be successful, you must demonstrate excellent verbal, written communications and critical thinking skills in addition to the following competencies:

Agility - ability to anticipate, assess, and readily adapt to changing situations and issues, remain objective under pressure by making well-considered decisions when there are competing and ambiguous priorities, champion a plan of action, quickly read a situation, and gain an understanding of individual and environmental motivators.

Develop Networks - seek to understand the perspectives and needs of internal and external stakeholders, build relationships and influence others by listening and sharing information, understand how changes might affect those stakeholders, and seek their input.

Creative Problem Solving - ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of issues, engage different perspectives, break problems down into manageable components, constructively challenge the way things have always been done, and create strategic solutions for communications challenges.

Drive for Results - set and accomplish goals and priorities, factor in complexity of issues and align plans based on the Museum’s objectives and government direction, remove barriers to collaboration, provide bold and competent advice.

Systems Thinking - consider emerging trends and recognize how they relate to Museum programs and policies, seek information and analyze potential outcomes of different communications approaches.

Qualifications
In addition to their resume, candidates are asked to include a cover letter that shows how they have demonstrated one of the above competencies in either current or past roles.

A university degree (Social Sciences, Marketing, Communications, or related field) plus a minimum of 4 years of directly related and progressively responsible experience in museums, heritage, arts, or cultural environments is required. Equivalencies may be considered. Experience in strategic marketing and communications including developing and implementing marketing and communications plans, media relations, web and social media strategy development, event management and issues management is required. An understanding of government processes and guidelines would be considered an asset.

Online applications are preferred. If you apply online, please ensure your cover letter and resume are submitted as one file.
