About the role
Under the direct supervision of the Director, Outreach and Business Development, the incumbent is responsible for contributing to the Canada Council’s objective of fostering and making known excellent, vibrant and diverse artists and art that engage Canadians and enriches their communities through the administration of the Canada Council’s suite of prizes including the Governor General’s Literary Awards, the Killam Prizes and the Musical Instrument Bank.

As the Manager, you will:
• actively seek to improve and enhance Council visibility and profile;
• carry out Council’s strategic role in promoting the value of the arts and culture to the general public through honouring excellence, innovation and achievement in the arts and beyond;
• contribute to Council’s vision for prizes, evolving the prizes framework aligned with organizational priorities and developing annual operational plans to maximize the impact of this program;
• be responsible for program renewal, analyzing trends and best practices to formulate recommendations and develops and implements impact measures and equity and diversity initiatives;
• ensure the efficient operation of Prize activities and implements effective work processes;
• oversee the coordination of the Peer Assessment Committees (PAC) for prizes;
• develop and implement Council’s policies relating to prizes or program procedures and delivery;
• Lead cross-divisional project teams, oversee the coordination of outreach activities, special events, prize promotion activities and prize presentations, working in close collaboration with Marketing Communications colleagues;
• leads the development of strategic promotion partnerships, as well as leveraging prize promotion activities to engage Canadians in conversations and celebrations of the role of the arts in society;
• ensure that all established protocols are met, in particular as they relate to the Governor General of Canada and other senior official;
• foster strong relationships with donors and stakeholders, collaborate to the negotiation of contracts and partnerships in support of prizes and events; develop budgets and monitors expenses;
• and performs other related duties.

You may be required to travel up to 30 days per year and on occasion, work irregular hours. The duties of this position require the direct supervision of 6 employees.

This position is located in Ottawa.

Requirements of the position
Education
• An undergraduate degree in contemporary arts practices or arts administration, or equivalent combination of professional experience and education
Experience
• Seven (7) years of progressively experience in Program Management or seven (7) years of experience in areas directly related to the principle responsibilities of the position
• Three (3) years of experience in a supervisory role
• Experience in managing Peer Assessment Committees (or related experience) would be an asset
• Experience working in a competitive, results-oriented environment and experience in corporate partnerships or related activity is an asset

Knowledge
• Knowledge of the Canada Council, its mandate, programs, policies and procedures
• Knowledge of the current state of the arts in Canada and of trends and new developments in the arts
• Thorough knowledge of the principles, theories and practical aspects of management including project management, financial management and strategic planning skills
• Knowledge and ability to apply equity, diversity and inclusion lens to prize administration
• Knowledge and ability to  leverage partnerships, and employ traditional and new media channels to increase awareness of programs, prizes and prize recipients
Skills & Competencies
• An understanding of  trends in prizes and prize promotion, including proven ability to employ mechanisms to demonstrate impact
• Capacity to lead program renewal and align strategies with corporate priorities
• Demonstrated leadership skills, outcome-oriented
• Excellent communication skills, the ability to write and speak in clear, accessible, and compelling language with a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, tact and sensitivity
• Excellent project management, leadership, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, time and priority management skills
• A high level of problem-solving, reasoning and analytical abilities
• Excellent initiative, judgment, interpersonal and relationship building skills
Bilingual Requirements
• This position requires the use of both official languages. The requirements in the second official language are: an advanced level in oral and reading comprehension and an intermediate level in writing.
