Job Description

The purpose of the Steep Rock Internship is to digitize and impose order on the existing mining artifact and archival materials. The Museum holdings include maps, publications, correspondence, photographs and artifacts of the iron ore mines. The intern will be expected to devise a storage system and create a directory of the materials. The directory will include a time frame of the operation, the major leaders in the mine operation; the engineers, the financiers and the diplomats essential to the history. The context of the mine story includes the 1950s post-war expansion, the commerce of iron ore extraction, and the Korean War. 
In collaboration with the Curator, the intern will fully assess the value of the materials, and create an ordered storage system. The process may include de-accessioning duplicate materials. The Atikokan Museum is an member of the Ontario Museum Association, and meets the annual standards of the Community Museum Operating Grant. The intern will be expected to follow the established Museum Collections policies for digitization and de-accessioning. The end result of this internship will be an ordered and functional reference to the mining history. Artifacts and archival material will be retrievable, and their associated documentation will be entered in the museum's collection management software program, PastPerfect.


The desired applicant will be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident entitled to work in Canada, and a student who has graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university. The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree or diploma program. The position will be a first full-time employment in the candidate’s field of study. The position will be of particular interest for an candidate interested in engineering and mining, and to those looking to gain work experience to prepare for a career in the heritage field. Applicants should have a high degree of computer literacy, including experience with databases, digital imaging and digital photography, hardware and software. Preference will be given to a candidate with a background in history, museum studies, or a similar field. Previous work or volunteer experience with a museum or cultural institution (2-3 years) is an asset, as is experience in working with volunteers. Demonstrated high-level of organization, research and writing skills are necessary. This opportunity is supported by Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.
