Job Description

The Aurora Historical Society is seeking a Curator to manage and enhance its treasured Hillary House, a National Historic Site. Responsibilities will include preservation and promotion of the site and its collection, and promoting its profile, reach, and impact, through the creative use of media and engaging public programming, focused on appealing to our members and to the diverse population of our community. The conservation of our National Historic site and its architecture is guided by the Ontario Heritage Trust, and the preservation of the site and collection must be responsibly managed to ensure its proper physical care, including climate control, pest prevention and cleaning routines. The Curator will also support important fundraising activities for Hillary House. The Curator is expected to secure financial resources necessary to achieve the mission of the society, through private, corporate, governmental and grant funding sources.
Our ideal candidate must have a degree in Museum studies, along with 3-5 years of experience in a museum setting. With knowledge of 19th and 20th century Canadian history, our Curator must demonstrate an understanding of heritage and conservation standards for both artifacts and facility management. Our Curator understands the Not-for-Profit environment and is oriented and skilled to secure funding from a number or sources. An independent self-starter, with excellent verbal and written communications skills and a strong customer service orientation, our Curator must be comfortable public speaking and interacting with our members, the public, office staff, and our Board of Directors. Our Curator also has strong social media and computer skills (including experience with Past Perfect Museum Software).
Hours of Work: Full-time, 35 hours per week, flexible schedule includes some weekend work during summer season.
