Job Description

The Oliver and District Heritage Society (www.oliverheritage.ca) operates a Museum and Archives in Oliver BC, a rural town in the South Okanagan valley known for its unique climate and agriculture production – primarily fruit and wine. Nearby communities include Osoyoos, Penticton, Okanagan Falls, Kaleden, and Kelowna. Our collection deals primarily with artifacts from Oliver and RDOS District area C.

The successful candidate, supported by staff, will develop skills in the Museum and Archives sectors through practical hands-on experience performing daily tasks and working on projects essential to the operation of a heritage organization, with an emphasis on collections, exhibits, and programs.

The successful candidate will be a positive and outgoing secondary or post-secondary student, a Canadian citizen, between the ages of 16 and 30, with an interest in working in the fields of museums/archives, information management, cultural heritage management, conservation, interpretation, tourism/hospitality, history, or education.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate(s) will exhibit strong organizational and social skills, responsibility and reliability, attention to detail, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. They must be able to conduct themselves in a friendly, professional manner and demonstrate excellent time management skills. They must have excellent communication and writing skills. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, creative, and willing to learn new skills. They should be comfortable working as a team and independently, and show a genuine interest in heritage work.

All applications will be considered, but preference will be given to students enrolled in programs related to Museum/Archival studies, education, arts/culture, and history.

A working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, computer operating systems, scanners, printers, DSLR cameras, social media and websites, and photo manipulation software is preferred. Office administration, interpersonal skills, research skills, and docent experience would also be assets. Having access to a vehicle is a strong asset for this position.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

- Working directly with artifacts and archival collections including cataloguing, inventorying, digital imaging, record-keeping, applying conservation, and maintaining the collections database
- Leading exhibit and walking tours
- Assisting visitors, volunteers, staff, and researchers
- Research
- Writing social media, website, newsletter, and/or blog postings
- Developing and leading educational programs
- Attending and/or organizing events as a representative of ODHS
- Office duties/office administration, routine maintenance and in-house projects

Note: The Heritage Assistant position(s) are conditional upon funding from Young Canada Works. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
