Job Description

Kings Landing, a world-class living history museum located on the Saint John River and one of the top visitor attractions in New Brunswick is seeking an individual to lead the Interpretation team as Director of Interpretation, Heritage and Collections, working in Prince William, New Brunswick.

Operated by Kings Landing Corporation, Kings Landing was created over a period from 1967 to 1974. The Historical Settlement depicts and interprets life in rural New Brunswick in the 19th century. For 45 years, over 3.5 million guests have come to experience history brought to life within a 300-acre site with over 60 historic buildings and through a priceless collection of over 77,000 artefacts.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of Kings Landing Corporation, the successful candidate will be responsible for the historical integrity and presentation of all interpretation, research; and all operations and educational activities related to the visitor experience. This includes: Interpretation (village costumed interpreters), Museum and Exhibition Galleries and all related public programs. In total, these lines of business represent $1.6 million dollars in budget with a staff complement of 4 full time and approximately 125 seasonal employees. This position is also the Museum’s Chief Curator, responsible for the study and interpretation of the Kings Landing collection; and shall act as the authority on the tangible and intangible history of the region, Intellectual Property and, will establish the research agenda and exhibition program for the Corporation.

The duties and responsibilities include:

• Overseeing the research, development, implementation and monitoring of an annual operational plan that encompasses 3 different units including: Interpretation, Collections, Education and Museum and Exhibitions;
• Accountable and responsible for overseeing staffing, budget, operational scheduling, historical programming, education programs, entertainment, and yearly to daily operational management and training;
• Developing and managing divisional operation plans to support and address the Corporation’s strategic vision and objectives; Human Resources Management including all aspects of staffing, staff training and development, work plans, performance reviews and collective agreement administration;
• Budget preparation and expenditure oversight;
• Overseeing a team of three (3) Managers and seven (7) Supervisors who are directly responsible for the delivery of divisional strategic objectives: interpretation, exhibitions, research activities, public programming, education, and management of the collection;
• Providing key input and advice in the development and support of the Corporation’s strategic plan.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Full-time position centered at the Kings Landing Administration office, the New Brunswick Heritage Collection Center, Kings Landing site and exhibition areas. Kings Landing is located 37 km west of Fredericton in Prince William, NB.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, abilities and attributes:

• A university degree in Museum Studies or Museology, History, Cultural Management, Archaeology, Anthropology, or any other related field of study and five (5) years of related work experience including a minimum of three (3) years in public programming and operational management and supervision;
• Demonstrated skills and work experience in project management;
• Curatorial, historical collections and research experience;
• Experience in leading, coaching and managing a diverse work team;
• Strong written, spoken and presentation communication skills

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATION: Preference may be given to candidates who possess:

• a Masters in Museum Studies or Museology, History, Material History, Anthropology, Archaeology with a specialization in New Brunswick history;
• experience with a combination of tourism operations/product delivery, historical program delivery, event delivery, interpretation, or living history museum operations.
