Job Description

Have you ever wanted to learn what goes on behind the scenes at a museum? The Reach is planning a season of programming content focused entirely on the history, culture, and contemporary character of the South Asian community in Abbotsford. The range of outcomes for this project will include exhibitions, online resources, public programs, and community events. The Collections & Special Projects Assistant will participate in research, content creation, and exhibition development. The candidate will play an important role in identifying existing resources in a variety of repositories, creating and managing comprehensive content databases, identifying gaps in The Reach’s collections, and supporting strategies to ensure accessibility of materials through translation, digitization, etc.
The Collections & Special Projects Assistant will conduct collections research to assess the scope and relevancy of holdings in The Reach’s archival and object collections, and the collections of a variety of museums and cultural organizations in the lower mainland of British Columbia. They will also contribute to other archival tasks including updating and adding to existing records in the collections management system, responding to occasional requests for digital archival images, and assisting in digitization of hard-copy photographic materials to support The Reach’s ongoing efforts to maximize collections accessibility.
The position is ideal for students at the undergraduate or graduate level, or those with a background in library and information science, anthropology, history, cultural studies, art history, museum studies, or cultural resource management. Our candidate will have high degree of attention to detail and be thorough in their approach to project work. They must also be comfortable working independently to a high standard. The candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, be highly organized, and have good time management skills. While not a requirement, a background in database software and digital photography is considered an asset. The candidate must also have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal record check.
Rate of pay: $17.00 plus 4% vacation pay
Work term: May-June (8-10 weeks), 35 hrs/week
