Job Description

The Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation in Banff, Alberta operates a historic home museum, the Historic Luxton Home and is need of a Museum & Collections Assistant for the summer.

This Historic Home is:
• A protected heritage property with a historic garden.
• One of the oldest remaining homes in the area.
• Located in Banff, the gateway to the Canadian Rockies, 1.5 hours west of Calgary, Alberta.
• In a destination for over 4 million international visitors annually. The town is bustling and busy, and the access to outdoor activities is seemingly limitless.

The position:
• Is for 16 weeks.
• Begins May 15, 2020 and ends September 1, 2020.
• The wage is $19/hour for a 35-hour work week.
• The work week runs from Friday to Tuesday.

The Assistant will primarily focus on Collection Management details (photographing, cataloguing, storage, database upkeep), but will also assist with Administration (day-to-day museum administration), Communication (social media and promotional outreach), and Education (tours, programs and events).

This position will be of interest to students seeking hands-on Collections training and work in a small museum environment. This summer student position will assist the Manager in the care and documenting of the Museum’s collections, as well as handle day to day operations at the home museum. The position works under the supervision of the Manager (or in her absence an Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation Board Member).

The job is multi-faceted and includes care, preservation, organization, documentation and information management of artifacts and archival materials, as well as dealing with the public and managing open hours of a small museum. Though we are willing to train applicants who demonstrate a keen interest, it is best to note that an ideal candidate should:
• Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to focus for long periods of time with a great attention to detail.
• Be a student in a degree or diploma program concerned with Museum Studies, History, or a related field.
• Be familiar with professional Canadian museum standards for collections.
• Have experience with Word, Excel, and databases
• Be familiar with handling a camera, and photo editing software.
• Be fluent in English.

Please Know:
• The position is open to all equity groups.
• The job has various roles requiring different types of activity and inactivity - some days can require long periods of sitting or standing, walking reasonable distances, some lifting and carrying, some outdoor work in any weather, working in some dirty / dusty locations.
• Some events and tours take place outdoors in almost any kind of weather.
• Applicants should know that finding housing can be difficult in Banff. At this time, there is a chance that the Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation (the governing body of the Historic Luxton Home) may have accommodation available for part of the summer for a nominal fee, but this accommodation is not guaranteed.
• This position is supported by Young Canada Works. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada, be enrolled as a full-time student prior to the position and immediately after the position, be between the ages of 16 and 30, not have another full-time job, be willing to commit to the full duration of the 16-week project, and be willing to participate in an evaluation/assessment.

Potential candidates will be invited to participate in an interview process.
