Job Description

The Kelowna Art Gallery is looking for a full-time Curator of Learning and Engagement with a strong commitment and enthusiasm for art education and pedagogy to join the KAG team. The principal goals of this position are to achieve a standard of excellence in overall program development including public programs, studio programs, school programs and community-based project initiatives that build an understanding of art and its practices by engaging visitors of all ages and experience levels, with the goal of growing the Gallery’s audience participation.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Curator of Learning and Engagement assumes the lead role in researching, planning, developing, promoting, implementing, and overseeing programs related to on-going exhibitions, public programs, studio programs, school programs, community events, and community-based projects in The Front project space.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 Research and keep up with current art museum/gallery educational practices, theory and trends.
 Research the interests and needs of current and potential participants from diverse socio-demographic backgrounds.
 Actively communicate with organizations throughout the region to identify trends, issues, needs, and potential collaborators.
 Work with the Gallery’s programming team to identify educational opportunities in both exhibitions and general art discourse around which public programs, studio programs, school programs, and community-based projects can be developed. Focus on developing programs that are accessible to all ages, cultures, and abilities.
 Coordinate and curate all aspects of The Front project space community exhibitions.
 Coordinate, in conjunction with the Gallery’s Marketing Coordinator and Graphic Designer, the effective promotion of all public program, studio programs, school programs, and community-based projects to targeted audiences.
 Oversee the Public Programming department’s annual budget for all public programs, studio programs, school programs, and community-based projects in The Front project space.
 Communicate with public programming assistants on inventory of materials and supplies for studio programs and school programs, and monitors condition of studio facilities.
 Coordinate photo documentation and promotional images for all programs.
 Develop criteria and means to evaluate effectiveness of programs and evaluates these on a regular basis.
 Recruit, train, and supervise public programming staff, summer students, and intern. In addition to supervising docents, student volunteers, and contract instructors.
 Write annual grants for summer students and internships (Canada Summer Jobs, Young Canada Works, and YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange). In addition to collaborating with the Executive Director and Curator on operational grants.
 Ongoing updates to the Gallery’s CADAC stats and visitor stats.
 Preparing journal materials for the public programming department 3X annually.

Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position based on a 35-hour week. Flexible hours will be dictated by programs and exhibition schedules. A driver’s license is required.

Qualifications
 Master’s degree in education, art history, visual arts, or related.
 Preferred 3-5 years of related experience in a gallery setting, including experience in public program and interpretive program development, supervision, staffing and budget development, project management and team leadership. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
 Thorough knowledge of visual arts and the ability to research, prepare, and present educational information which is accessible to a range of ages and levels of experience.
 An understanding of BC’s current provincial curriculum standards is an asset.
 Experience grant writing and preparing reports on statistical information is an asset.
 Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to motivate and supervise staff and volunteers, work as part of a staff team as well as represent the Kelowna Art Gallery to the public.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
 Excellent organizational and project management skills.
 Excellent multitasking and problem-solving skills.
 Strong administrative skills, including computer literacy and experience using programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
