Job Description

The Curator of Indigenous Studies acts to increase knowledge and awareness of, and to enhance appreciation for, the histories and cultures of the Indigenous communities represented in the curatorial unit's mandate. This involves independent research, publication, development and preservation of collections, creation of public galleries, public outreach, education, and communication to ensure high-quality documentation of Alberta's Indigenous heritage. As well, the position oversees the museum's engagement initiatives with Indigenous communities, particularly as they relate to the repatriation of sacred ceremonial objects under the First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects Repatriation Act.

Key Responsibilities include:

Collection Curation: This position builds and maintains a collection of objects of significant historical, cultural and educational value. They will also evaluate and prioritize collections needs, identifies areas of strength and weakness, and designs and implements an appropriate object acquisition strategy

Repatriation: This includes facilitating First Nations cultural continuity and enrichment through collections repatriation under the First Nations Sacred Ceremonial Objects Repatriation Act. This work will happen with the Director of Cultural Studies to oversee the repatriation process, ensuring that the ministry fulfills its responsibilities under the Act and that all repatriation requests are processed in an accurate, timely and culturally respectful manner

Research: this position sets the direction for the unit's initiatives and will consult with communities on research activities in order to present findings in published articles, lectures, and conference presentations
