Job Description

PREAMBLE
Travel Manitoba president and CEO has called the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre “the tourism destination with the most potential in the province”.
The Executive Director has overall responsibility for the operation, promotion, and financial health of the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre. With new and exciting fossil finds every year, the CFDC is gaining interest around the world with visitors in 2018 from 42 countries, 38 American states, every Canadian province and two territories. A growing number of scientists are now contacting the CFDC for assistance in their research. Educators are drawn to the CFDC’s unique opportunities for learning. Tourists remain fascinated by Bruce, the other fossil exhibits and the chance to dig up some ancient history for themselves.
The Executive Director works to advance the CFDC’s three pillars of science, education and tourism. Working together with the Board of Directors and CFDC staff members, he/she is responsible for the overall smooth functioning of the museum. This will involve keen business acumen, superior supervisory and motivational skills, excellent teamwork, maintaining a respectful workplace and enthusiastic promotion of the CFDC. Most importantly the executive director will lead the charge for a new stand-alone facility.
SUMMARY
Lead the development of a new facility. Manage the overall operational and fiscal activities of the museum. Plan and develop procedures to improve the operating quality and efficiency of the museum. While at all times maintaining a respectful workplace, supervise staff in accordance with museum policies and procedures. Responsible for the hiring, training and career development of staff members.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Lead the development of a new facility in partnership with staff, facility committee, board and partners.
2. General operational management of the museum including staffing, budgeting, marketing, business planning and business development.
3. Maintaining a respectful workplace in compliance with all applicable legislation.
4. Spearhead public and private fund development initiatives.
5. Plan and develop systems and procedures to maintain and improve the operating quality and efficiency of the museum.
6. Marketing, media and public relations, in consultation with the Curator with regards to scientific content.
7. Developing healthy relationships with key stakeholders including government, tourism and education representatives.
8. Supervisory and career development responsibilities for Curator and Office Manager, as well as bookkeeper.
9. Participate in Finance, Personnel, Marketing, and Business Plan Committees and other relevant committees as assigned.
10. Ensure the development and implementation of an effective tourism strategy in partnership with staff.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensure that the health and safety codes are adhered to.
2. Participate in and provide relevant information and reports for CFDC board meetings.
3. Continued development and maintenance of the CFDC website.
4. Responsible for security of the museum, the collection and exhibits.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. University degree (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience) is required; preferably in a Business, Commerce or Marketing area.
2. Good knowledge of office procedures, processes and technology.
3. Previous management or supervisory experience is required.
4. Prior experience supervising projects and team activities.
5. Financial or organizational management experience is required; administrative experience is preferred.
6. Experience working with a Board of Directors is desired.
7. Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
8. Strong team building skills.
9. Strong interpersonal skills.
10. Good computing skills.
11. Valid Manitoba driver’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for a museum environment, with a 40 hour week. The typical work week will be Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day. Flexibility is essential with extra hours required occasionally during evenings and weekends for meetings and/or conferences etc.
