Job Description:

Do you love working with children and youth? Are you hoping to use your talents in the arts to teach and inspire? The Reach is seeking a responsible, enthusiastic candidate with an interest in education, particularly in the art gallery and/or museum setting, for the position of Cultural Programs Assistant. During the summer work term, the Cultural Programs Assistant will gain practical, hands-on experience in several areas of museum and gallery operations, with a focus on public and educational programming and community cultural development. The hourly rate for this position is $14.50 plus 4% vacation pay.

Under the supervision of the Curator of Learning and Community Engagement, the Cultural Programs Assistant will support field trip activity, design and deliver daily summer art and heritage camps for children and youth, and participate in a wide range of outreach activities around the community, acting as an ambassador to The Reach at festivals and events.

The ideal candidate is a returning post-secondary student at the undergraduate or graduate level, studying education, visual art, art history, museum studies, history, cultural studies, or a field related to culture and heritage. Experience working with children and youth and/or developing programs or lesson plans is favorable. Familiarity with contemporary art is not necessary but is considered an asset. Our candidate will have a moderate knowledge of program and event development, good administrative and time management skills, familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They will be comfortable working with the public and must be capable of working effectively independently or as part of a team. The candidate must have a valid criminal record check and driver’s license.

To be considered for the position, applicants must be 16-30 years of age; must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status; must be a full-time returning student in Fall 2019; must not have another full-time job (30 hours +); must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; must not be collecting Employment Insurance (EI) during the work term; and must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The Reach is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from candidates who are Indigenous, visible minorities, persons who are differently-abled, or new Canadians.
