Location: 20 Sky Blvd, Goffs, NS B2T 1K3 (Across Highway 102 from the Halifax Stanfield International Airport)
Period of Employment: May 12 – August 31, 2019 (16 weeks)

Background
The Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum is Atlantic Canada’s only museum devoted to preserving all aspects of Atlantic Canada’s aviation heritage. Granted “Local Museum” status by the Nova Scotia Museum in 1989, it is owned and operated by local volunteers since its inception in 1977.
Both civilian and military aviation history is depicted in the extensive displays found within our facility. Included are hundreds of artifacts, large and small, from books, badges and uniforms to engines and aircraft. Designed to be informative, from a heritage standpoint, a visitor will leave with a greater knowledge of aviation.
The museum requires three students for the position of Visitor Services Assistant/Collections Technician. Training is provided by the museum’s volunteers. With the aid of the volunteers, the students carry out the day to day operations of the museum throughout the summer season. The students will also be responsible for the planning and delivery of two special events: Family Fun Day and Wings ‘n Wheels.
In addition to day to day operations, a primary focus of the work term will be updating the collections database. ACAM is inputting its collection into NovaMuse (http://www.novamuse.ca/), an on-line collections database for museums in Nova Scotia. Training will be provided by staff from the Association of Nova Scotia Museums.
Job Description
- Greet museum guests upon arrival.
- Answer questions and provide information as required.
- Give tours of the facility.
- Operate the gift shop and perform cash balancing duties.
- Collect artifact information and enter into collections database (NovaMuse).
- Assist in the planning and delivery of special events, including developing marketing materials, updating social media, preparing press releases and public service announcements, securing sponsors, organizing activities and event logistics.
- Develop and implement a social media strategy, including analyzing current social media results, recommend social media platforms to use, research and develop content and maintain social media accounts.
- Learn and adhere to the museum’s policies and safety procedures.
- Take appropriate actions if a security or safety issue arises.
- Help keep the museum clean and tidy.
- Assist with ground maintenance.
- Secure museum at the end of each day.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education Level – at least one year of post-secondary education, preference will be given to those with an interest in or studying history and/or aviation.
- Experience in or knowledge of the use of Excel.
- Experience using social media.
- Basic knowledge of office procedures including filing, phone etiquette, etc.
- Able to keep accurate and detailed documentation of work.
- Strong, professional verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Able to work both independently and as a part of a team.
- Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
- Are legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
Field of Study: History, Education, Museum Studies, Business, Management, or Marketing
This position will provide transferable skills for the students which will be useful in whatever career they pursue. Students will gain experience dealing with people and groups, instructing children and adults. They will gain public speaking, artifact conservation, display development, and event management experience. They will learn about Nova Scotia’s role in aviation as displayed in our collection.
