Location: Waterloo Region Museum/Doon Heritage Crossroads, 10 Huron Road, Kitchener

Description of Duties:

Performs conservation and restoration treatments on artifacts and archival collections at the Region’s museum and historic sites (Waterloo Region Museum, MacDougall Cottage, and Joseph Schneider Haus).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

• Knowledge of preventive and treatment conservation techniques for artifacts, historic structures and large equipment; and materials, behaviours, and sources of material deterioration, acquired through a 4- year university degree plus a Master’s degree, plus 2 years of experience practising conservation techniques on collections at a museum and living history site – OR – a 3 year degree plus a 2 year post-graduate certificate in Art/Artifact Conservation, plus 2 years of related experience practising conservation techniques on collections at a museum and living history site.
• Ability to operate and maintain a conservation lab, conducting scientific analysis of materials, mounting artifacts, and analysing and monitoring conditions in which artifacts are kept.
• Knowledge of and ability to follow corporate policies, procedures, related legislation and standards (e.g., WHIMS, handling chemicals), and conservation guidelines/techniques.
• Must possess a Firearms Acquisition Certificate (or obtain within 3 months of hire).
• Knowledge of building environmental control systems and museum pest control.
• Knowledge of artifact packing and techniques used for transportation. Ability to transport artifacts between various work locations, as required.
• Communication skills to respond to requests for information/advice from other cultural institutions and the public; speak with technical and professional personnel regarding physical maintenance of the curatorial centre and correct functioning of environmental control systems; present lectures and seminars to staff of other museums, students, the public, cultural organizations and professional bodies; conducts tours of the curatorial centre and WRM for public and professional audiences; and participate as an effective team member.
• Ability to read scientific literature related to object conservation. Ability to write condition and treatment reports requiring scientific language; maintenance/housekeeping manuals; and disaster plans for staff at historic sites.
• Computer skills, using software such as Microsoft Office and collections management databases.
• A valid “G” Class driver’s license and satisfactory driving record are required to operate a Regional vehicle.
• Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
