Collections Assistant

Location: Old Log Church Museum, Whitehorse, Yukon

Job Status: Temporary full-time position, 5 days per week (Monday to Friday), 7.5 hrs per day, 40 hrs per week, 12 weeks from early January to late March 2019.

Salary: $17/hour

General Information
The Old Log Church Museum is a small community museum responsible for documenting, preserving and sharing Yukon’s spirited history. We strive to provide our visitors with an enjoyable & educational experience. Located in downtown Whitehorse, the museum is housed in a unique log church built by Reverend R.J. Bowen in 1900. The Old Log Church and Rectory are designated territorial and municipal heritage sites. The permanent collection of the OLCM has 4500+ objects in the collection ranging from archival materials to ecclesiastical vestments and artifacts.

Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director, the Collections Assistant will:

1. Improve and standardize collections documentation. This will include photographing artefacts and re-photographing items that were previously photographed in an incompatible format, creating condition reports, and searching each record for geographical information.

2. Working with the Executive Director upgrade collections storage and housing for specific items. This will include: relocating and re-housing archival items, re configuring foam inserts, assessing the storage of textile boxes, making garment bags, moving hanging textiles to a rolling rack, scanning and adding images of framed photographs to the museum collection database.

The Collections Assistant will also assist the Executive Director in a number of collections-related tasks, include environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, cataloging, research, and records management. The Collections Assistant may be asked to perform other duties as required.

Qualifications
• A minimum of one year of experience with cataloging and collections database entry (can be a combination of employment, volunteer, and/or educational experience).
• Working knowledge of collections management care, documentation and preventative conservation practices and standards.
• Degree or diploma in a discipline appropriate to museum work, such as museum management, curatorial, collections management, conservation, archives/records management, archaeology, anthropology, history, First Nations studies, or a combination of related training and experience.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Comfortable and willing to speak publicly.
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
• Experience conducting research.
• Content knowledge of Yukon and/or Yukon Anglican Church history is an asset.
• Proficient in the use of computers including MS Office Word and Excel.
• Experience working with databases (FileMaker Pro and Collective Access) and Adobe Suite is considered an asset.
