Job Description:

 

Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the role of a Museum Program Instructor is to present exploration-based, hands-on history and science programs for multiple audiences - with an emphasis on environmental programming and technology related to heritage. The incumbent will be required to work 2 - 3 days per week, Monday - Friday 9 am to 5 pm. These hours will fluctuate depending on seasons and peak periods/events and may include day, weekday, evening and or weekend hours.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in the preparation of Museum buildings and program materials. Prepares for school groups and public programs by collecting teaching collection artefacts for discussion purposes, rehearsing scripts, and compiling activities;
- Is assigned various groups by Program Coordinator, greets class or scheduled groups and delivers an introduction and then leads groups through the various exhibits (indoor & outdoor). May also travel to a schools to conduct a pre-visit orientation for various classes;
- Presents science and history educational programming for children and youth at all levels including site tours of the museum galleries/facilities, introducing children and youth to hands-on interpretation of historical artefacts;
- Conducts school and scheduled group tours and moves visitors through various exhibits and sites, stopping at specific locations to offer information and answer questions using combination knowledge gained through research and prepared statements;
- Leads multi-disciplinary workshop programmes for children, families and community groups who register for informal education programmes at the Museum, including overnights with guides and scouts, PA Days, and Birthday Party programmes;
- Provides staff support for special events in a variety of roles, ranging from interpretive programming to visitor service;
- Monitors inventory of supplies, reporting to the Program Coordinator any items needing replacement. Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment to reduce and minimize risk to other staff and participants;
- Provides tour guide services to the general public when they visit the site. This includes leading tours of the museum's various exhibitions, assisting with general inquires and customer service.
- Assist with the training of new Museum Program Instructors and Education Program Assistants; and
- Other Museum related duties as assigned.
