Job Description:

 

The Summerland Museum and Archives Society runs a museum and archives year-round in Summerland, British Columbia. Summerland is situated within the beautiful South Okanagan Valley. Summerland (population 8,742) is an agricultural community with a location that makes it a natural tourist hot spot, particularly in relation to wine tourism, the Experimental Gardens, and the Kettle Valley Railway Train Ride. It has many opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation, as well as a vibrant arts community.

The Summerland Museum and Archives is looking for a temporary 12-week full-time student to work as a Summer History Program Leader at the Summerland Museum, from June 4, 2018 to August 24, 2018. This position will provide direct hands-on, career-related experience for a student considering a career relating to museum work.

The Summer History Program Leader will lead the development of the Summer History Program for Children, as well as museum tours, such as Geology or Grasslands Tours. The Summerland History Program Leader will support the day-to-day operations of the Museum by welcoming visitors and answering phone calls.

This temporary position is supported by the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations. Candidates must meet the Young Canada Works Eligibility Criteria (www.youngcanadaworks.ca) and register with the Young Canada Works online (www.youngcanadaworks.ca).

The ideal candidate will:

--be currently enrolled in relevant undergraduate studies such as History, Museum Studies, or Political Science.

--have a strong interest in working with children.

--preferably have experience in the development and implementation of programs for children.

--have experience using PC and MAC operating systems.

--have education, practical training, and experience working with children and/or the public.

--have an interest in museums and history, preferably with a focus on early 20th century Canadian history, including local Indigenous history.

--have excellent organizational ability.

--have strong communication, interpersonal, oral, and written skills.

The successful candidate is required to supply a criminal record check and a copy of their credentials.

Position Status: Summer Student

Hours of Work: 35 hours/week (Tuesday through Saturday)

Rate of Pay: $12.65 per hour
