Are you interested in researching local history ? Are you detail oriented and computer savvy? You may be just the person we need to fill our Collections Management Assistant position!

An application for funding to support this position has been approved by the Labour Market Programs Support System (LaMPSS) of the NS Department of Labour and Advanced Education. Details of this position and how to apply are as follows.

Job Description: Randall House Museum is open from May until Dec. The curator manages the museum for the season and mounts a special exhibit. Many tourists visit the museum in the summer months and many local community members attend museum events and come to see the special exhibit. In 2018, Wolfville will be celebrating its 125th anniversary since incorporation in 1893. Under the direction of the Curator, the Collections Management Assistant will help to install and interpret this special temporary exhibit. The candidate will also assist with the installation of a new permanent exhibit at the museum that focuses on local heroine Mona Parsons¸ the only Canadian female to be imprisoned by the Nazis during World War Two. A component of these projects will include assisting with the planning and implementation of events relating to the new exhibits. Other tasks will be doing an inventory of our archival collection, scanning or photographing archival and artefact material – letters, photos, books, other papers, in the WHS collection, cataloguing and doing additional research if needed, uploading documentation to the Collective Access database and so making them accessible via NovaMuse. They will assist the curator in improving storage and organization of the material as required. The Assistant will be expected to attend Collections Committee meetings and may be asked to take minutes. From time to time the candidate will assist with other tasks as they are able including providing guided tours, assisting with additional outreach programming, general housekeeping, conducting retail sales, creating social media content (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram posts), as well as researching and writing blog posts.

Candidate profile:
• University level student pursuing further studies or a student pursuing a degree or certificate in Museum Studies • Interest in or experience in collection management • Ability to read cursive writing is essential • The candidate should be familiar with the Microsoft platform, file management, MS Word, Publisher, Photoshop and use of the internet including social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube. • Experience in photography and videography would be preferred. • Training in the use of web-based collection management software (Collective Access) will be provided but some experience with filling out forms would be useful • Attention to detail and appreciation of the need for quality control essential • Ability to meet set deadlines • Strong writing and editing skills • The ability to take instruction and then work independently • Self direction • Experience handling artefacts and fragile archival material would be useful • An interest in local history would be an asset • Flexibility and willingness to take on small additional tasks as may be required by museum staff.

Estimated start date: 28/05/2018 Work Period: 13 weeks
Wage: $12.00/hr, 35 hrs per week
