Job Summary
Under the joint supervision of the Curatorial Manager and Operations Manager, you contribute to the mandate of the Museum by helping to operate the Museum and working on a collections and digitization project. The Collections Assistant will migrate collections data from a Microsoft Access database into the Museum’s new Minisis software. This will include retrieving the artefact or archival material from its location, analysing artefacts, entering a description, measurements, condition, and location, as well as digitizing and photographing artefacts for online accessibility. Responsibilities ● Become familiar with the Diefenbunker's collection, the location of objects, the location of records, and how they are currently stored ● Become familiar and, with time, proficient with Minisis, the Diefenbunker's collections management software ● Migrate data from a Microsoft Access database into the Minisis software ● Provide descriptions, measurements, condition reports, and locations for artefact records Properly photograph artefacts and digitize archival materials for artefact records ● Provide information regarding locations and conditions to those seeking artefacts or records from the collection ● Conduct an artefact research project, using the Diefenbunker's collection and archives Conduct tours of the facility with a specialized focus on the artefacts and collection Other duties as needed Key requirements ● Experience in proper artefact handling ● Experience in artefact, archival, and collections research ● Familiarity with photographic and digitization equipment ● Familiarity with collections management software ● Current university or college student or recent graduate in a related field (education, museology, history, communications, or comparable studies) ● Familiarity with computers and Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Excel, Word and Powerpoint. ● Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills ● Minimum 1 year previous experience working with the public ● Minimum 1 year previous cash handling experience ● Adaptability, innovation, as well as proven ability to work in a teamwork environment ● Strong communication skills and excellent presentation skills ● Must speak English fluently. Fully Bilingual with Canada’s Official Languages (French and English) is preferred ● Ability to lift and move up to 20 kg ● Reliable daily access to a vehicle ● Standard First Aid/CPR C ● Police Records Check ● Smart Serve Assets ● Studies in history, especially military and/or Cold War history ● Experience in dealing with groups, from young children to seniors ● Understanding of database systems and organization
