Job Description:

  An Amazing Internship Opportunity!
Visitor Services Research Intern

Join the dynamic team at the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site as our Visitor Services Research Intern.

Help us establish who visits the Atlas and why. Hone your research and data analysis skills over this 8.25 month internship and work with the Atlas team to shape the future of this amazing site and its fantastic programming. The job will involve surveying our visitors throughout the summer and compiling a comprehensive report which will feed into 2019 site developments. Key responsibilities will include undertaking background research on the Atlas' past visitor trends, developing a survey method for 2018, conducting visitor surveys in June, July and August and working closely with the management team to ensure accuracy of the results. The Atlas will also provide support in order to enhance the future employability of the intern.

We are seeking the following attributes for the ideal candidate:

Essential: Recent graduation (within 24 months) with a degree in anthropology, psychology, sociology, archaeology, history, museums studies, tourism studies or a closely related discipline. 1+ seasons worked in front-line duties (interpretation, visitor services) at a heritage site and/or museum. Fluency in English; written and oral. Excellent written communication skills and outstanding oral communication skills. Positive, proactive attitude and good problem-solving skills. Basic database (Excel) construction experience and fluency with word processing software. A willingness to work in challenging conditions (hot weather, historic buildings, extremely varied terrain), as visitor feedback will be gathered at various points around the site. Valid drivers license and reliable transportation essential as the Atlas is located in rural Alberta with no public transportation available.

Desirable but not essential: Retail experience. Experience with linguistic data analysis software and transcription software. Previous experience recording oral history or visitor feedback. Basic oral/written fluency in French and/or Mandarin Chinese. Current basic first-aid certification.

We are seeking a positive, enthusiastic individual who is keen on working with a great team and can handle some of the interesting challenges of working on a huge, historic industrial site located in one of Canada's most dynamic environments. Candidates must be willing to work in hot/dry conditions, as it's quite toasty in the Badlands during the summer months. A love for industrial heritage and community history a huge plus! We are located in rural East Coulee, Alberta, (15 mins from Drumheller) so your own transportation is essential.
