Job Description:

The brief

Every project at GSM begins with a great concept based on strong content. As a firm that engages in cultural projects across the globe, it is important that we identify the best collaborators to ensure that the content that we develop for our exhibitions is based in fact, backed by research and is fresh and engaging. We are currently seeking a talented, creative and passionate curator/exhibit developer to join our multidisciplinary team responsible for reimagining the permanent exhibition of a well-renowned museum exploring Canadian culture & history, with an important nod to Indigenous culture. This museum is undergoing a major reinvention and the permanent exhibition will reflect the newly defined narrative and institution. Under the direction of the head of content, the curator will play an essential role on the project’s creative team, collaborating closely with the project’s creative director and designers, as well as with the client and other stakeholders, in order to develop the exhibition content from start to finish.

Responsibilities

Develop the storyline and the curatorial content to create an experience that is inspiring for the target audiences;
Conduct the research required to create a permanent exhibition that is engaging and anchored in the context of Canadian and Indigenous culture and history;
Participate in defining clear sets of exhibition themes, messages, storylines, content structures and content delivery strategies;
Participate in the selection of artefacts and imagery in collaboration with the museum curator;
Work in close collaboration with the client’s consultation committees, community leaders and other stakeholders involved in the production of content and narratives;
Participate in defining the exhibition’s media and interactive treatments;
Coordinate and follow up on content development throughout the design and production phase with media producers, translators and other consultants involved.

Aptitudes / Qualifications

Independence, initiative and organizational skills are key;
A capacity to generate enthusiasm for the project’s content and interpretative potential is fundamental to the overall success of the project. If you find the subject fascinating and engaging, so will future museum visitors;
Strong curatorial skills, such as making editorial choices, and a natural ease in making complex ideas relatable to a wide audience by defining key messages and synthesizing research are essential;
Cultural awareness and sensitivity, juxtaposed to strong sense of ethics, is essential for a project featuring an important Indigenous component;
An ability to collaborate with various stakeholders and coordinate many aspects of the project with the client are key;
Leadership skills are essential: content development initiates the design process and exhibit developers are regarded as principal members of the creative team;
Curiosity and a genuine interest in people’s stories and culture are a given;
Team play is essential: exhibition developing is a collaborative process and the work requires daily communication with individuals from varied backgrounds.

Requirements

A minimum of 5 years of experience developing content for museums or museum-related projects;
Background and/or diploma in museum studies, curatorial studies, Canadian studies, Canadian history and/or social sciences;
Experience working and consulting with First Nations, Inuit and Metis Nations and/or working with people of various cultural backgrounds;
Languages: English as a native language, with spoken proficiency in French;
Computer programs: Microsoft Office suite. Knowledge of InDesign a plus;
A driver’s licence is mandatory, as client is based in Ontario and mandate will involve punctual travel.

Contract information

Duration of contract: Exact duration to be determined. A first full-time phase will begin in September 2018 and end in November 2019. A second part-time mandate will continue into the following year, to follow up on the production of all content related elements.
Location: Montreal, with regular workshops in Peterborough, Ontario.

Please note that only candidates with relevant profiles will be invited for an interview.
