Job Description:

The City of Markham is a dynamic and change-oriented leader among Canadian municipalities. The recipient of multiple environmental awards, we are recognized for our innovative sustainability and urban planning initiatives as much as for our fiscal accountability. More than 320,000 residents call Markham home and benefit from our rich heritage, culturally diverse environment, vibrant local economy and focus on quality of life.

The main objective of this position is to offer valuable hands-on experience to a recent graduate with a curatorial, art history or museum studies background, who is interested in pursuing a career in the Canadian cultural sector. This experience will provide the candidate with an overview of the workings of a not-for-profit cultural institution and allow them to develop a variety of critical skills needed to work within this field, specifically in the areas of exhibition and collection management.
Working under the supervision of the Varley Art Gallery of Markham’s Curator, the Curatorial Assistant position will consist of two main components: (1) assisting in all aspects of exhibition research, coordination, implementation and evaluation, and (2) assisting in the management of the permanent collection. The candidate will be assigned two main projects during the course of their internship: (1) to develop an exhibition proposal for the Collections Gallery to be implemented in the fall of 2019 and (2) to lead the review of theGallery’s Collection Policy. Ongoing tasks will include: logistical and administrative support; budget tracking; managing exhibition submissions; assisting with grant applications; writing didactic material; researching future exhibitions and artists; participating in exhibition changeovers; coordinating gallery publications; updating the collection management database; processing copyright requests; and contributing to social media content.
