Job Description:

 

Under the immediate supervision of the Head, Conservation, the incumbent assists in activities relating to the documentation and preservation of the collections and the conservation of objects.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Evaluate and document the condition of objects and undertake the conservation treatment of them according to professional standards;
• Give advice on the handling, mounting, crating, travel and storage of artefacts, particularly in the context of specific projects;
• Develop expertise in conservation issues, especially those presented by objects in the Museum’s collections;
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current issues in the conservation field and of new techniques in the conservation of objects;
• Acquire excellent historical knowledge of the collections of the Museum;
• Undertake research in conservation and the treatment of objects;
• Maintain professional relationships with other conservators in Canada and worldwide;
• Share expertise through conference presentations, articles in professional journals or by other means;
• Assist with the supervision of temporary personnel and interns;
• Represent the Museum in a professional capacity.

Employment Conditions
• Full-time and permanent position, 35 hr per week work schedule;
• Compensation commensurate with experience with competitive benefits;
• 3 months’ probation period.

Qualifications and Profile Required
• Master’s degree in conservation from a recognized university;
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in conservation;
• Excellent knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the Canadian Association for Conservation;
• Other relevant training/experience (e.g. History of material culture);
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;
• Demonstrated research skills;
• Highly analytical thinking, sound judgement and decision-making skills;
• Ingenuity and sense of innovation;
• Capacity to plan, autonomy – ability to work with little or no supervision;
• Great manual dexterity, characterized by precision, attention to detail;
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices;
• Knowledge of The Museum System software, TMS is an asset.
