Job Description

The Junior Conservation Technician will assist Conservation and Collections Services staff in the preparation of artifacts for
movement to and storage in the new Ingenium Collections Conservation Centre. The Technician will report to the Manager,
Conservation Services, and will work alongside Conservators, Assistant Conservators, Artifact Handlers, Mount makers,
Cataloguers, and interns/students.
The Technician will identify and manage hazardous artifacts in the Ingenium Collection as per set protocols, propose and
perform conservation treatments to ensure artifact stability, safely prepare and pack artifacts in appropriate materials for
movement to and storage in the new Collections Conservation Center, and document and track packed artifacts. The
Technician will assist Mount Makers with their duties, including securing artifacts to support structures, and constructing
packing structures under direction. Duties will also include moving artifacts and groups of packed artifacts to the Collections
Conservation Centre and unpacking, storing and tracking artifacts as per a set protocol into new mobile racking and
cantilevered shelving.
The standard weekly hours are: SWW 37.50 Hrs (5 days consecutive Mon. - Fri.)

Education and Experience:
As an ideal candidate, you hold a college diploma in Artifact or Museum Conservation from an accredited institution.
Membership in the Canadian Association for Conservation is an asset.
You also have experience in the following areas:
- a minimum of six (6) months recent experience practicing the Conservation of scientific, technological, industrial,
electronic, agricultural, and/or aviation objects with a museum, institution, project or private practice;
- demonstrable experience preparing artifacts for long-term storage, transport, shipping or other re-location
- identification and labelling of hazardous material;
- preventive conservation treatments.
RATED REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge:
- of Ingenium Canada and scope of its Collection;
- of safe packing and handling of artifacts for transportation and storage;
- of Conservation appropriate packing materials and box-making techniques;
- of Conservation Treatments, materials, techniques and practices relevant to the
Ingenium Collection;
- of the physical and chemical properties, characteristics and agents of deterioration
of a wide range of organic and inorganic materials including modern and hazardous materials;
- of Health and Safety issues pertaining to lab work and hazardous collections.
Abilities:
- to reliably respond to Conservation and Collection Care protocols and instructions;
- to lift, handle and move artifacts and boxes up to 25 lbs independently by hand;
- to reliably manage collection care details such as artifact numbers, locations and tracking protocols;
- to follow proper Safety protocols when dealing with hazardous collection items and equipment, including
wearing the prescribed PPE;
- under direction, apply basic conservation techniques;
- under direction, safely remediate some hazards within the collection;
- under direction, participate in the safe movement of large artifacts;
- to have a lift truck operators license and safely use a lift truck is an asset.
